1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

:biggrin_2552:hello! I am trying to decide if I should just hang it up..... I have 4.5 years driving vans, flatbeds and refer. And I have bounced from 1 dirtbag outfit to another. Have missed birth(s) of my kids, lost cars and homes and am currently loosin my butt at the time of this posting. I have worked for 16 companies in this short time, breaking the rule of "get some time in, at least a year". I have starved on the road, ran that 4500 mile week and near wrecked from exhaustion. Have been screwed more than hyperactive lotlizard on crack and am at my wits end! my driver record is pretty good, couple tickets but nothing serious but I have worked for WAAAY too many companies for anybody but more comps to consider me. yeah I can do the contract w an O/O thing but I got 5 kids (3 in diapers) and need bennies. no wrecks on my DAC iether.......any and all input is greatfully recieved, should I just go get a nursing asst job and hang it up? somebody holla!!:biggrin_2554::biggrin_2554::biggrin_2554:

If you have a way to make good money and be at home with your kids than DO IT! No kidding. You will miss out on their entire childhood and next thing you know you will be trying to make it home for their graduation. You know. If I had another chance I would make my family live on whatever I could make at home. I would get "into" their lives. What I mean is thier life would be my life. I was too young and dum when my kids were born to care much about the details going on in their life.

Now. If you cant then get with some good benifits and miles and stick with it. No company out their will not piss you off from time to time. You have to get though those moments. It passes.. Times are gonna get tuffer and your gonna wish you had a good payin job with bennies.

I totally agree with Countrycruiser. If your not happy than you better get out now while you don't have that "road blood" in you! You stay in it long enough, you'll actually miss it when you leave. I'm currently a dispatcher and make 50K salary. And I hate it. I'm also dicvorced. But if I was able to see my kids everyday, I would learn to like anything that pays all the bills!

Hey Coolbreeze, why do you hate dispatching? Can you describe exactly what you do (and all the headaches) of the job that makes you hate it so? Is there ANYthing good about the work you do?

Redcoat, I hate to get off the subject of this thread. But what I like most about my dispatching job, is my steady income and the fact that I'm home every night. I work 0830 to 1700 M-F, most weeks. Especially now that its slow. But a few things I don't like are, meetings, conference calls, meeting numbers, and having a boss that keeps a watchful eye on everything you do. I do have other reasons why I miss being on the road, but I don't wanna get too far off the subject at hand. I started driving a truck when I turned 21. I've never had an office job, till now. Being in the office is very stressful, compared to being on the road. I was an on-site account manager for a large retail supplier, for a year. I am currently a dispatch manager for an overseas container company. Any other questions, I'll be glad to answer in another thread.

My bet is you would get more satisfaction out of nursing than what you got out of truck driving. If you put half as much effort into nursing as you did into trucking you would be doing alot of good for alot of people. The nursing sector needs hard workers like yourself willing to go that extra mile!

I wanted to do trucking back when I was single, then I fell into telecom making a decent pay, got married, had 3 kids and eventually ended back in a traveling telecom job. I then got a boring 7-4 office job and hated it! After that I got in the oilfield, the marriage ended and I got out due to the isolation, tough conditions and hours. I moved to SoCal, haven't found a decent job all year, when I decided to get into trucking. My kids are almost all grown, so trucking is a good thing for me at this time. I'm not cutout for an office/factory/warehouse job, never have been. Anyway you can get a local job?

Problem with nursing is not just the extra schooling
it's that there is a shortage of teachers
(nursing pays much more than TEACHING nursing and you need same qualifications)
so there is usually a waiting list 6 mo's + long
