Help with the Cobra 29 NW LTD

Try dialing back your rf gain a bit. Then adjust the squelch

 

maybe your antenna/coax are bad or just don't match the radio. i have been told that your antenna is 90% of your receive/transmit capability. i have a cobra 29 and it talks pretty good.

 

yep!! been through LOTS of radio problems with my 29 .

 

well,let me just say that what i DON'T know about cb radios could fill volumes
but my guy told me that my wilson (not the 2000, just a whip, similar to your firestik) would out perform the fiberglass anyday. i'm a slipseater so my 8 year old cobra has better days than others, and i'm pretty sure any problems are due to the antenna mount getting a better ground on some trucks than others.

if i was you i'd take your rig to your guy and have him look at it all hooked up on the truck. maybe the deficiency is in the radio of the guy you're trying to talk to?

 

Check the antenna mounts on the mirrors. Mine was doing what you describe and the coax was loose and had some corrosion inside where it connects. I replaced the mounting stud and cleaned the end of the coax and not it works good again

 

My coax came unscrewed from the mount, too. Makes me wonder, did it do it on its own? Or, did it have some help?
Either way, I was beginning to wonder why my radio just wasn't working as good as it usually does. One day, while I was washing my windows, I just happened to see the coax was almost off the bottom of the mount.

 

Friday night I was sleeping in my company truck at one of our facilities when one of the mechanics crashed a trailer into it. So now I'm using a loner truck while they decide whether or not to fix it or total it out. Yeah, he was moving and pretty much destroyed the entire front end but that's a tale for another thread
My cobra 19 seemed to work fine in my truck, but since I've moved it into the loner, I have to squelch it way up to keep it from constantly hissing.
Since the previous user of the truck took the antenna from atop the mirror, as well as the in dash coax, I got a new coax and a new Errikcson antenna from the shop. clamped the antenna to the mirror bracket and ran the coax between the door and the door jam.
I confess, I know next to nothing about cb's. I know the 19 is not the greatest radio out there, but it's all I can afford right now.
Does anyone have any idea why the radio now spits and hisses constantly unless I turn the squelch way up? Could the coax being pinched in the door be causing this?
Sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology here.

 

I would definitely check where the coax is routed between the door and cab. Also, if you bought cheapo coax, that could cause it. Tuning (or lack of) could be another factor.
