So let me get this straight. Whoever uses AOBRD before Sep 17 2017, can continue using them for 2 more years. So if all the trucking companies install AOBRD right now before the deadline, then who the hell gonna install ELD's, since AOBRD gives you a bit more freedom?

The real question is if that is true then why the hell is everyone trying to sell ELD? Sell me AOBRD and tell me of all the settings I can control myself... bet you'd make a lot of money..

I called BigRoad and spoke with sales person. If you buy theirs ELD before dead line and install it you can run it as AOBRD.
They all sell ELDs. Some of these ELD can be used as AOBRD.

Currently my elogs don't put me on the drive line until I drive for 5 miles. I've heard that's going to change in December & if it does that's going to add about 10% more hours to my 70 or cut my production by 10%.

Very rarely do I use all 70 hours buy it does happen occasionally so this could be an issue occasionally.

Right, that amount of miles is completely unacceptable.
For company drivers, typical pay is between .42 and .50 per mile effectively.
That is $800-900 per week before taxes fica etc.
That is absurd, nobody will or should drive OTR for that pay these days.

Let alone an owner operator trying to put together a decent business while only getting 80k or 90k loaded miles per year.

Again, I just see guys going out and doing stupid stuff like night driving to trying to eek out 2000 miles a week just to stay afloat + comply with HOS regulations.

This would be a massive disaster they (FMCSA) couldn't ignore if it were not for mega carriers being able to still cheat with their existing systems until 2019.

Sounds conspiratorial but I wonder if this is going to be the club the megas use to force out of business the smaller guys for two years and then roll the regs back out after the tornado decimates the industry and constricts the supply of available trucks (thus raising freight rates and giving them more bargaining power with customers).
