One of my drivers was placed Out of Service for his trailer this morning, and I was wondering if anyone could help me out on what the issue could be. My office is in the states, and the trailer is sitting in Ontario right now, so I don't have any information other than what was provided to me on the inspection report. The officer stated...
“1 ¾” crack through metal on right side frame near drop. Hydraulic brake line feeding 3rd axle, right side, found to be crimped closed by a set of needle nose ratchet pliers. Massive hydraulic brake fluid leak from 3rd axle right side brake line and caliper area once pliers were removed and brakes activated.”
On August 23rd that trailer was in the shop and had a new brake actuator installed. On June 8th new brake pads and calipers were installed as well. Does this sound like an issue with the shop we used?

Ahh, electric over hydraulic, either they do nothing, or skid the wheels. Sure sounds fishy to me. Are you sure the driver didn't do that ( they'll never admit it, though) Sounds like something a driver would do, not a shop. None that I'd go to, anyway.

It was the driver's very first load with the trailer. He seemed as surprised as I was when we talked about it.

Mmm hmm, surprised he got caught, maybe. I just don't think a garage would let that go. Too much at stake. To be honest, If I was in that situation, to get home, I have crimped brake lines on cars. It rarely works for long.sh333 Thanks this.

Thanks, I really appreciate your input.

I guess it's not the drivers responsibility to do a through pretrip on his equipment on his first run with your company? Vicegrips hanging from a brake line should have been easy to catch I would think?

Being out of the loop for years, I'm not familiar with this setup. I was wondering how juice got to the trailer axles, ( years ago that was an electric actuator) but I see now, the trailer has it's own hydraulic system, and gets an electric signal from the truck. I don't think it works too well, as not long ago, I saw a 3 car hauler with a gooseneck trailer, loaded,( with 3 cars) and couldn't stop for a red light.
sh333 Thanks this.
