    Ummmm.... no.

Walmart charges a lumper fee when the shipper is the freight customer. If Walmart hires the carrier to go get the freight then they don't charge a lumper fee as theywould be just charging themselves. They never charge a fee to deliver to their own stores, only to unload goods that have been sold to them by some outside supplier. HTH.

It's because fresh produce, meat, freezer and dairy items..basically most anything perishable is purchaced after the freight is accounted for. Most meat and produce loads have to be inspected before it's actually bought by Walmart. So technically it is not Walmarts freight until it is counted and temperatures checked. Luckily, all Walmarts will soon be direct billing the carrier or the vendor in certain circumstances, the unload fee.

I once asked the transportation clerk about the lumper fee, and why it's a lot lower than most places.

They told me that they don't pay an outside service, and that the WM employees actually do the unloading. The lumper fees are held separately, and used periodically to pay for cookouts for the warehouse workers. I kid you not.
