    No.

You never have a "fresh clock" using the split break.

And one thing that has caught me off guard once or twice... the 8 hr break pauses your 14 hr clock... but the 2 hr break does not.
I'll use the 8/2 when needed but most of the time it's better for me to do the 10 hrs. I'm better rested that way.

There's no way to maximize. 11 hours is simply just that. 11 hours. No matter how its sliced.

The 8/2 is a nice idea to eliminate the 30. If you're one of them who don't sleep for 10 hours straight. Or can't make your body function like the boss wants you to.

Myself. Preferred the old rules. I won't drive 11 hours. to me. That's just fast burn out of the job. Similar to working 7 days straight.

I do it to get a stupid free shower at a Loves. 8 hours from home driving, 2 hours for dinner and shower, drive 25 min to the shipper and shut it down, pick up the load after 8 sleeper, and i have basically a full 13 1/2 & 10 1/2 to get home. Saves time on the first day's 30 min break but that's all.

Something to consider if you regularly do a split unnessessarily, you lose time on the 14 to be sitting around for 2 hours. What if you run into delays at a shipper or breakdown somewhere and you've already used your 2 hour break? You're just wasting time then. It is only worth doing when you're about to pick up or deliver, but the load is not ready yet. Not so good for long hauls across the country.

Using the split can make sense on long runs to eliminate the thirty or to give yourself more time in the middle of the day. It can also make sense if the two hour break is already forced at a customer location. Outside of that it does tend to cause more problems than it's worth by burning up your 14.

Split sleeper allows you to factor out your 1/2 hour break. So you get a 1/2 more with the spit that is it. You can now drive 14 hours a day instead of 13.5; big deal.

The whole problem with the split sleeper is no one in the office understands it, so you are likely to get planned less rather then more.

So it all boils down to eliminating the 30 minute break.

That would work since I'm driving Florida to California only, I'll pick up a few hours each way

Yes. Keep in mind that if you are on paper logs you better be sure you know what you are doing so you don't screw it up and get yourself an expensive ticket. And if you are ready to roll at eight hours, you sleep in just a little bit, you are losing the small advantage you gain and end up costing yourself time instead.

    Just noticed this on FMCSA

    15-Hour Limit
May not drive after having been on duty for 15 hours, following 8 consecutive hours off duty. Off-duty time is not included in the 15-hour period.

There goes extending your 14 hour day!
