I am looking for recommendations for insurance coverage for driver with CDL 1.5 year old.
Driver going O/O having difficult time getting a reasonable premium. Quotes so far as high as $2250 / mth. (Liability @ $1m & Cargo @ $100k - I am suggesting that boss also carry General Liability @ $1m).
Lowest quote being $1200 / mth w/ GLOBAL HAWK, which according to A.M. Best is an unrated provider.
Anyone familiar with them? Being "unrated" will bar us from carrying for certain brokers such as Landstar, but we will survive w/o Landstar (if you have OOIDA, then you know what I am talking about). We are in need of recommendations for insurance coverage at a decent premium.
Also, the owner is leasing onto his father's company because of the difficulties arising from the young age of the CDL, but father's insurance quoted a ridiculous figure so father's insurance company is not an option. We need some help here from the community....Thank you in advance.

Here's the breakdown. As a rookie driver, obtaining insurance will cost a fortune. You now see why the mega carrier who will hire anyone with a pulse pays so little.
Insurance companies view you as a risk, and rightly so. Best advice stay a company driver for at least another 2 years and prove yourself with a clean record. Once you have 3-4 years solid experience, then start calling for insurance.MHC Thanks this. -
Friend of mine recently got just under $10,000 with progressive as a new o/o but he had 27 years driving comercial vehicle with a spotless record and an excellent credit score in the 800 area. So you getting a $14,000 quote sounds reasonable.Love Trucking and whoopNride Thank this.

I'm not waiting that long....HELL NO.
I was quoted $13K if I got my own Authority (1 yr CDL). I know an O/O that pays $18K and he has 20yrs experience -
It depends on the area you live in as well.
Highway_Executive and luckystar Thank this. -

Have you talked to an insurance broker? They can shop your deal around to dozens of providers and find the best deal. My insurance with 150k cargo, reefer is just over 1500 a month. That's typical from most examples I can find. Insurance isn't cheap and it seems to get more expensive every year.TallJoe Thanks this.

Especially the first year. After two years, by an example of some people I know, it could be reduced well below 10K. Part of the reason I did not want to jump off with reefer was the insurance cost, plus the reefer cost, as I considered only a new one. I had bad experiences - horrors with used reefers as a hired driver, so If I ever decide on a reefer it will sure be new. So I will let the idea wait for now.
