People in that crowd were defenseless. First, because typically speaking, concert venues are generally made "gun-free". A quick look at Nevada's CCW laws, that may not have been the case as no-gun signs do NOT have the force of law, and public events such as this does not look to be specifically named as prohibited by the law. In other words, it might be possible that there WERE legally armed individuals in the crowd. Scratch that. It is likely there were armed individuals in the crowd (2 of the dead I heard were off-duty cops from California, and as such were likely carrying). Second, the shooter was on the 32nd floor of a building. I have no idea how far from the venue the building happened to be, but a handgun from that distance is virtually useless for hitting a specific target, but could have very easily caused MORE collateral damage as people in adjacent hotel rooms came under fire from any handgun rounds that were sent towards the gunman. Bottom line, there really isn't anything anyone in the crowd could have done other than to take cover and pray. No amount of pro-gun legislation could alter that...just like no amount of anti-gun legislation would change the fact that what the shooter did was ALREADY in violation of several laws already on the books.

I don't carry a gun to fight back against a fully automatic rifle 32 floors up and 1000 yards (a guess) away. I carry to protect against the thug that happens to hold up the store I'm shopping in, or the restaurant I'm eating in, or the hot-head in traffic who feels the need to exit his vehicle and approach me and my family in our car. I also carry for protection against braver-than-normal coyotes stalking me in the yard, whether I'm pretriping my truck in the pre-dawn hours or checking the propane tank after dark. I also encourage my wife to carry for the same reasons. I'd feel worse losing a loved one who COULDN'T fight back, especially if I had played a role in creating their vulnerable disposition. Yes, it would suck to lose them either way...but I'd much rather my loved ones have a fighting chance to determine their own fate in a situation.

Nope. Did just read ISIS claims the guy converted to Islam a few months ago. Seems strange if that's true. He had it made; retired and living the good life. His girlfriend wasn't involved; she is overseas, but does live with him when she's in the states.

The guy didn't "just snap". This was a premeditated act of domestic terrorism. I'm guessing it had a political angle as well.

He had been in that hotel room for days plotting, a whole cache of weapons were recovered in that room.

Won't be long before surveillance video shows him meandering through the hotel, eating, gambling, etc. days before he pulled the trigger.

Also won't be long before the disgusting politicians faces start showing up on t.v. with their blame tactics.

I bet they blame Nevada for having such relaxed gun laws. But people should wait till a motive before placing blame.

Ive thinking it's approximately 600 feet from hotel to venue as the crow flies. There was or used to be a distance finding tool for google earth you can pick a spot drag arrow to second spot and presto range down to feet. It's within easy rifle shot particularly when firing downwards against a large target 22,000 people would be.

Ive mentioned as a CHL person I would not consider returning fire with the colt against the shooter in the M'Bay if I was at the concert. I rather have the concert at home instead. The colt will fire a round about 410 feet roughly if I stood shoulder arm straight 6 feet above the range floor. It will land on the floor about 390ish feet to 410 feet give or take a few dozen feet. With that kind of bullet drop in ballistics the M'Bay requires a long gun. Probably a .45-70 with a ACOG or a 4x 2 inch ring. 7mm comes to mind. Old school Remington M40 copy similar to used in USMC sniping... Or similar to put a round into that window. But it's no point talking about this because no one at the concert will have a long arm availible, except in one of the private buses maybe? Suppose he ran in grabbed it and aimed at the M'Bay in the chaos, one of the concealed carries might just drop him... you never know. It's better to flee and get hard cover.
