As much as people dislike Kevin Rutherford, he has a "fuel buying guide" that explains how to buy fuel. I never looked at it as buying fuel is simple (pump price - fuel tax = actual fuel price).

Also check out different fuel discount programs. You'll be amazed at the savings.

One benefit to filling up versus "enough for the trip" is you have less receipts/time stamps. I typically plan my fuel either at the start or end of day, so you essentially save 15 or 30 minutes each week. Sounds silly, but like others mentioned, you may need that extra time if you have to pull out a recap.

Also be aware that fuel is roughly 7 lbs/gal so putting the "o/o" 150 gal tanks on will cut into your weight. My empty weight, full of fuel, is around 36,500k.

I'm late to the party, but here is my .02.

I use fuel apps to find the best fuel prices. I save hundreds of dollars per week doing this.
I try to fuel at Casey's if I can, they have non bio fuel at a great prices. $2.45/gallon in Illinois. If you are ever on I-57 in illinois, Gilman at exit 283, Fred's Fuel is quality fuel and usually $.20 $.30/gallon cheaper than the pilot. You can save enough money on fuel to buy a shower and still be ahead.

Learn the states fuel tax rates. always buy IL, OH, MI, WI, IA, PA, FL. they along with others have high tax rates but base price will be cheaper. Never buy IN & KY Fuel. Pointless. Also AL, MO, MS, have low rates so the other states will carry them. I always get $25-$100 back every quarter. You don't want to get hit with a $500 fuel tax payment at the end of three months.

i buy all my winter stuff (really) in August/sept. just the other day, i bought 2, 35 pound bags of speedi dri at $9.00 per bag for the ice, and i pout that into a 5 gallon pail.

but i buy my 2 cycle oil, snow blowers in the summertime, cuz they are taking up space and many times the discounts are great. i cannot find shovels as of yet.

i get strange looks, but hey, don't come to me for help when YOU HAD the time to prepare...right?

I also get strange looks. This is not intended to be a support group of prepper truckers but there was quite a bit I carried in that semi which came in mighty handy. Half inch bolts two to three inches long for example. For those durn landing gear cranks and two sets of trailer door bolts. I have a horrible tendancy to snap the #### things... And people laugh and poke fun. Until I pull the shiny bolt and proceed.

UPDATE: just done my 3rd quarter IFTA's. Indiana has now changed. They no longer have the $.16 tax and the $.11 surcharge. It's now $.47 period. Making Indiana a place you may need to buy fuel as it will carry lessor states. Imagine my surprise when I saw that. It's been the old way for almost 10 years. They just changed it. Just FYI for all you guys that buy fuel the way I do. Keep eye on IFTA website for changes
