Can any veteran licensed driver or rookie driver who has recently acquired their cdl explain this procedure and how exactly it is done in clearer detail?

the handbook explains how much slack is acceptable and the procedure to determine amount of slack if any, it's pretty clear unless someone can post pics for you
KK416 Thanks this. -
I understand that, what I don't understand is where on the 5th wheel you have to place your mark and where you have to measure to. To me it seems, in order to get a measurement with the trailer attached, you would not only have to mark the 5th wheel but the trailer apron as well because you cannot see the kingpin when it is attached. The book does not say this though.

Are you talking about trailer wheelbase laws? The 12.5 metres (41') to center of rear axle group measured from kingpin law?
-
See handbook link he posted. It's about 5th wheel slack. Don't know if that would be part of practical test or just knowing what the acceptable amount of slack is for written test.
-
Probably just know the measurements for the test and have a clue what it feels like when 5th wheel is getting to the point it needs adjustment or rebuild/replace. Get a feel for it over time.
Measurement for trailer apron and can't see kingpin when coupled is what threw me off. -
Chalk mark on side of fifth wheel and then underside of trailer, pull on trailer and check distance between marks if any.
Adjusting depends on make of fifth wheel.KK416 Thanks this. -
It's on the schedule 1 and one of the drivers/students from the previous class was asked this on the exam. Basically, he was confused about this as well as the examiner, so he marked the trailer apron right above the pivot pin of the fifth wheel on the trailer apron and edged the tractor forward and showed the examiner that the movement was less than 1/2 inch. He passed. It's a ####ed up question and nobody seems to have the right answer for it.
