How much can you expect to make local?

in my area (large midwest city) ltl dockworkers make more than $15 per hour

 

I run local freight, but I'm on OO... I make these guys weekly pay usually in one day. But, if you are a company driver, I don't know. I think most guys are taking home around $800 a week, if that. My buddies doing the construction work are up there around a grand or more net weekly. Myself, I like the short haul stuff as an OO, as it does pay better when compared to running OTR. And there is less wear and tear on the truck too. Most of my freight consists of a few skids or empty racks. I don't know what to tell you.

The definitive answer to your question is "It depends".

There are tons of local jobs, everything from straight LTL union gigs to agricultural jobs. You can find jobs running mail that pay $25 and hour with over-time at $30 after 40 hours. You can find ag jobs at $15 with over-time after 45 hours. You can find beverage haulers that pay mileage, plus case, plus stop, plus who knows what else. You can find just about anything.

That is the situation. So what you need to do is figure out what you need to make and how you want to live and apply for the jobs that will give you that.

 

I agree, who do you work for and what part of N.Y. are you In? I'm with Serafini construction. Rate is $21.69, the only problem is we might be approaching a layoff period we will see

 

$815 net is an unusually slow week for me. $1-1200 take home is more the norm and I was hitting that within 3 months of going solo last year May. Also bear in mind that OTR also has the benefit of saving on commuting costs. I don't own a car and when I hear how much my brother spends just on insurance (not to mention car payment and gas) I may never own one again.

 

Yeah but you need 200k a year to live in a decent place and the taxes taje most of it!

 

If you are making $800 a week OTR, just go home and get a local gig. and that $1000 a week was gross, but do the math, you will still more than likely come out ahead and be home every night. Unless you drink and chase women that is... LOL!
