I'm in a classic "OTR" 48 state gig. I'm here because that's my preference. Don't have a home or family. I can either be bored out of my mind sitting or making money. I know what I'm going to do. The rate of pay has nothing to do with anything. But that's my world and I realize most don't fit into my mold.

Long haul vs short haul. Short-haul pays more in total revenue then the long-haul short-haul being five six hundred miles long hual 1500 to 2500 and above. My problem with the short hual is I spend anywhere from two to four hours loading and two to four hours unloading unloading now from 7:15 a.m. and it's 10:40 a.m. and I'm not even done. I run out of hours. So is the Long Haul better for less money? Being that you spend less time at shippers and receivers and more days of the week just driving a full 11 hours? I'm getting 2.25 per mile sometimes 2.90 for 5 to 600 mi runs including dead head on the short haul ,but they're eating my sleep hrs and my log book. Once I go electronic no way I can pull this off..

    Thoughts suggestions, experince all welcome.

Too many factors to answer such as what part of the country is each driver in, are the live loads or drops, does each driver get cpm or percentage of the load and are they paid equallay, are the trucks goverened, etc.

The 70 hour pie is the problem.

It's still going to come out to 70 hours in 8 days.

I rather burn that in 6 and lay around the truckstop having servants bring in hither the grapes, laundry, meats, drinks and entertainment.

Or marry a trucker and make it a team. Suddenly it's 140 hours in 6 days. BOOM in the Money.. in the money...

True,.. You have your good and bad.

I was just generalizing. Not trying to make a fact.

70 in 5 days, day 6 you rest 34 (1 full day + a 10 hour break), and you pick up where you left off working 14 hour days on 7 & 8. That is 98 hours you can potentially work in an 8 day period WITH a reset.

...but like I stated earlier, if you've got to work that many hours in a week to make ends meet, you're doing something wrong.

Aw. you got me. Argh. LOL.

As a trainer said to me once, forget the big stuff, that's not the issue. It's the devil dancing on the small details...

It depends if they're running the 5 corridor or the 35 corridor?

Are they pulling van, or flat?

    It's all irrelevant.
Trying to broadbrush the entire industry is futile and ridiculous.
Chicken hauling or cow mobiling is totally different than pulling that load of toilet paper or can goods.
Or a hazmat tanker vs. a drop deck.
