Wow. Big Brother is watching! Hope I've been fair and balanced ... LOL
If it came up in the conversation, I would be interested in knowing the company's response to Supersnackbar's charges that they can't plan. I.e, what's this business of running numerous trucks into a major metropolitan area with no apparent proactive plan for getting them back out while loads in other areas are often late for pickup by the time they're assigned? I keep hearing from old timers that it's due to the company having been outmanuevered on some major contracts combined with some "rating" with which I'm unfamiliar having sunk moreso than a real lack of freight. After all, one of the selling points for me in signing on with Crete was that the lion's share of the goods they haul are recession proof. In theory at least, people don't stop buying toilet paper, toothpaste and other household goods when the economy is in a down cycle. Assuming I don't get detained, I'll be putting in my empty call around 08:30 in the Dallas area tomorrow morning and there's a good chance I'll be sitting the better part of the day with a fresh 70 because of this. It would be nice to know what's really going on and what plans, if any, are being made to remedy the situation.
As for ET's thread ... I didn't sign on with Crete because of this thread, but this forum in general played a significant role in deciding which companies I applied to when I first started.

Welcome to the world of truckdriving!
With regards to Millis, from what I understand they have a good training program but they are feeling the freight crunch also. I spent some time next to one of their drivers last month while in Maine and I wouldn't be surprised if he turned out to be Supersnacks brother. Almost identical as far as attitude went, not at all happy with the way the company has been running him lately but able to voice his displeasure in his own eloquent way. He was a 5yr man with the company and his miles had drop from the 3000mi range to under 2000mi for the last few months. That isn't necessarily a reason to avoid any company right now. You will probably find that to be the case with a majority of OTR carriers at this time. You just managed to pick a very bad time to start in this line of work.
TMC has a very extensive thread on this board and I'm sure you have spent time there. A great training company, but you will work hard there and they don't subscribe to the 100% complaint logs like Crete does and from what I've heard from a number of their drivers, you will have to "adjust" the logs on a regular basis to be successful there. In this day and age, those "adjustments" can put you in prison if you find yourself involved in a fatal accident, irregardless of who was at fault.
There was a time when I ran the hottest logs on the road with other companies and I was always conscious of the fact that it could destroy my life and my families life in the blink of an eye and I find that running 100% complaint with Crete to be the NUMBER 1 reason to drive for this company. Not only do they insist on it and take proactive measures to assure that you do, they have developed a system where a driver can be 100% legal and still have absolutely no problem making a good living as a driver.
As far as the referral thing goes, it is most likely too late. A driver must be mentioned on first contact to get one. Don't worry about it. I'm not on this board to cultivate referrals, but I'm not a stupid man, I won't turn one down either. For anyone interested, I have received a total of one referral from this thread over the last year (no, it wasn't the guy responsible for stirring the pot). I've actually had a few more than that put me in for one, but due to the hiring standards of Crete they didn't make the cut.
I'm here to share my experience and BS with other drivers. I didn't really know what to expect when I started this thread, but am proud of what it has become. For the most part it has remained a very civil thread where my fellow Crete drivers can exchange notes and update each while providing much needed information to others thinking about entering the world of OTR driving.

I have heard some decent things about Crete. I have not been driving for over 10 yrs. though. Wonder if they would consider someone like me. Clean living and clean record.

Have not driven in over ten yrs. Think I should get a refresher course some where.
I probably forget more than i remember. LOL -
Yeah, you'll need to get a refresher course somewhere. I was looking at having to do the same thing last year when I was looking to get back into driving. Decided it wasn't what I should be doing.
You'll be surprised at how much you actually remember about driving. -
I sent for info at a Sage School which is nearby. PDTI certified. Hope it doesn't cost too much

Still need 4 mos recent OTR experience before coming to Crete unless that has changed in the last 3 weeks since I've spoken to a recruiter.
