With the e-logs comming out I want to make sure we are compliant. We have one drive with two trucks. One truck is a 99 F550 and the other (main truck) is a 2005 F550. We drive mostly under the 100 mile exemption, but occasionally go over the 100 mile (about once or twice a month). With some of these times renting a twin screw tractor from penske. Do we need to look at a simple e log system, or can we manage with using the exemptions

No log required as long as you do not go over the 114 mile more then 8 days in a rolling 30 day period.

Also as we have had an issue with this recently, we run paper on those runs over the exemption for some dedicated customers, one is 160 miles beyond and both Michigan and Indiana said it was alright as long as it isn't a regular occurrence with a majority of the work within the exemption range.

Fist is those trucks are over 10k lbs. So you must follow all logging rules. To get the short haul timecard exemption you need to meet three criteria.
    1. No more than 100 air miles, which you admited to.
    2. Must start/stop at the same location.
    3. Must not work more than 12 hours.
If you meet all three you can use a timecard. If you go beyond either three criteria you must fully grid log.

Now, if you do use the timecard, you do not need an eld. If you grid log you only need an eld if you go over 8 days in any 30 day period

We currently use the time card exemption, as the majority of our loads are under 40 air miles. Though I thought the daily time limit was 14hrs.

Over 12 hours is supposed to require logging.
