For the past 6 years I've been in the IT world, earlier this year I lost my job and have slowly crawled my way back out of the hole that I was left in. In this time span, I've found an interesting love for big rigs and driving trucks. A good friend of mine has kindly allowed me to bobtail back and forth to a few local locations to see if its something I'd be interested in doing, pulling his empty trailer a couple of times, negotiating the yard, and bending the law a bit in the process (working on my CLP). I'm currently reading and studying the CMV booklet so that I can hopefully take my CLP test later this week or next week. I don't know what it is, but I've enjoyed the little bit I've done so far and it has attracted me to turn this into a career.

Glad I found the forum as I hope to get advice on things to study, ways to practice and hone certain skills, etc.

    Where is your location?
As for studying, Google : Free CDL Practice Tests (your state name)
Trucking is a great career and thousands of IT people are switching to trucking.

I’m in the same position, I’ve been a machinist for the last 18 years, and considering getting out of It. Seriously looking into trucking.... doing a lot of research.

If you're in the right location, can make good money with linehaul or tankers.

I’m in Southeast Oklahoma, I’ve been checking out a few different companies that train drivers, but there are definitely a few that I’m going to try to stay away from.

You're probably in a pretty good spot for Maverick Transportation. They have 3 divisions and if it were me, I'd go for flatbed division vs. refrigerated or glass.
More companies that seem good and have their own school are Jim Palmer Trucking, Millis Transfer, Contract Freighters (www.cfidrive.com).
If you can attend a private or community college cdl school, you have more choices.
