I've never experienced this problem. But I can see where every post on here is logical. One other thing though, I wonder how much temperature fluctuations would have to do with it. Particularly on the farm truck that is just used intermittently. Just a thought.

When in doubt, safety wire it.

Race cars safety wire their oil filter, too, I think.

Heck, even the K&N filters I use for my Chevy Silverado have provisions for safety wiring. The hole is drilled in the nut that is welded onto the filter...that nut is also great for getting them off.

When I worked for USX, I had an oil filter com loose & began to leak oil. It was about due for service, anyway. It was a 60-Series DD,too.

The lease truck I'm driving now dropped it's oil plug on a stretch of state highway in Tennessee, though.

the one thing i have found through all my years of working on engines, both gas and diesel is if that gasket gets dried up it will crack and become week causing filters to become loose, if that truck sits for long periods of time, best to replace the filter before starting it up. and make sure ya check all gaskets especially valve cover, head and oil pan. they will dry up as well. best to start that truck once every week and let it warm up to operating temp. it will keep every thing lubricated.

sometimes I wish the oil filter was loose instad of having to fight for hours to get it off! Don't really worry about it much now though since I\m not servicing a whole lot of trucks any more

Back when I was with my trainer we had a filter work loose. We didn't find it, either. Instead it was a NM DOT officer at the port of entry on I-10 coming out of AZ. I had only been with my trainer for about a week and was nervous as all get out when we got pulled around for a level 1. The filter was the only thing they were able to get us with. My trainer surmised that the mechanics must not have tightened it up when we had it serviced at the Oklahoma City shop when we were headed to CA.

I have a 12.7 Detroit s60 further back oil filter came loose twice, currently sitting on the side of the highway waiting for oil. Didn't know it happened to others as well.

You woke up a 13 yearold thread.

Side note for a answer. Everytime you change filters on a Series 60, you check threaded nipple into filter housing. They loosen, have seen them fall out. If they are not tight when filter is installed, filter will never stay tight.

    Check on every filter change.

Check the threaded insert on filter housings. Sometimes they vibrate loose in the housing. If it comes loose remove and put red lock tite after all oil removed from threads. Will usually solve the problem

    TonyG and Rideandrepair Thank this.
