I am running a Garmin now, but it's not 100%. I still use the map, especially for a wide mental picture. It's just a tool. I also call and confirm directions from my shippers and receivers as well. Sometimes I just read off what I have on my gps and more than 50% of the time they say, "Don't go that way, go this way!"

Don't get ahead of yourself and think that you will be able to run off of an off the shelf gps. Unless you have a laptop and would buy ALK's CoPilot program, or the new WorldNav that I haven't been able to find anywhere for less than $599, your best bet is to bone up on the atlas.

A sense of direction is important for any type of professional driver, unless all they do is the same route day after day. Hope you do ok....

its great to have little "toys" in the truck. i have my own garmin gps, but, i have a great ability to ready a map. keep reading maps and you will catch on pretty quick. start asking other drivers about roads to take and what not to take. they way i learnt when i was a rookie was, i set in truck stop restuarants listening to the old timer drivers talk about roads and all that other stuff and picked up from their. gps just makes life a little easier but if you dont learn to read a map real well what happens when that gps fails? always have something like knowledge to fall back onto.

Like already said you can't rely solely on a gps. I'd recommend a cheap tom tom or garmin. I use a tom tom one and cross reference with my atlas and carrier directions.

I use the copilot 11 truck gps. It is the best in my opinion. Most of the time it is about 97% correct. My employer pays practical miles and thats the setting that i have on my gps. The directions i get on the qualcomm are 100% similar to the ones i get on the copilt gps therfore i get payed for every mile i drive. I would recoomend it for someone who get payed using the pc miller practical miles. As with any other gps, it is not perfect but thats the reason why we have brains.

I also use Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008, with the Trucker overlay that has the low overheads, Chicken coops, fly Js, Pilots, Loves, Petros, and TAs. and also using Live View is GREAT for getting a arial view of the shipper or receivers site. then My TOM TOM is a back up

I was thinking that using the directions from the company, plotted on the GPS mapsource software, would not only be 100% accurate but would verify the directions given since the address is a constant. Then you just load the route in the GPS and roll. It sounds better than having even one instance of forgetting a turn and having to pull of to map read.

I have driven across the country and various places before and it works for me every time. I have never had an issue when I plot my own course and just use the GPS to track where the turns are.

I would and will still keep a good atlas in the truck.
