Hey guys
I currently have my AZ CDL with air brakes. However in AZ air brakes are not a endorsement (even though you take a tests to get them). I want to transfer to a CA CDL. I took the driving test at a 3rd party testing facility and they do not have to state if the truck is auto or manual on their sheet.
I hear that CA has a manual truck restriction and air brakes are a endorsement
my questions are:
1. when I transfer my license to CA will they put a restriction for manual transmissions?
2. Will my air brakes transfer over to my CA license?
thanks,
Andrew

Go to the california department of motor vehicles website for full details. From just a glanse air brakes are NOT an endorsement but rather a requirement as it is here in FL. I also did not see any restrictions for an automatic with CDL that may be for 4-wheelers since many ppl today have never driven a stick. The complete CDL manual is online for you to view further. Hope this helps.
I do have one question. Why in the he11 do you want to go to CALI! -
I've been crossing the border too much . I thought AZ referred to a Canadian license (Z is the air brake endorsement ) and I though CA was referring to Canada . You see a lot of Canadian trailers with "AZ Drivers Wanted " stickers on the doors . I have heard more than 1 driver ask on the CB why Canadian companies wanted Arizona drivers .

I checked on the AZ CDL manual I could not find any info about the air brakes being required but it also does not state them as a endorsement. For the written tests I paid $10 extra for the air brake test. It also doesn't state about any restrictions for manual transmission trucks
On the CA manual it states on Pg.6 "Your CDL will be restricted to the type of vehicle you use for the driving test. For example, if your test vehicle does not have air brakes you will be restricted to driving vehicles without air brakes."
I know Cali has a restriction for both manual trans and air brakes because I talked to the CA DMV.
I am moving to Cali because thats were my family is.
I have been searching to find a concrete answer to this but have come up dry.
If you have a link please send it I dont want to loose my air brakes or right to drive a manual trans truck because the CA DMV doesn't understand AZ CDL
thanks,

Your basic CDL is the same everywhere. Since it is for all intents and purposes a "Federally" regulated document now.
There are minor differances in the endorsement catagories. But they should transfer without issue.
When I transfered back to MS. I was only required to retake my written hazmat, as is the case with all states now.
CA may require you to retake your written part of the test. But they won't simply deny the transfer of the endorsement, unless you fail the written.
If you are restricted to an auto in CA. It's because you tested in an auto. And unless AZ shows this as a matter of your CDL restrictions. No one is the wiser.
Maybe this link will help you.

You already have an original. You want a transfer. Language, language, language..... -
The third party testing facility did not state on the form that goes to the AZ DMV to get my license if I was tested in an auto or manual .
Would I have to take the written tests if my class A is less then 2 years old?
thanks,

I can only give you my basic understanding of the overall picture. And the language I'm reading within the CA web site.
Overall, I can transfer my CDL to any state. It's a simple matter of surrendering my old one, then taking a written hazmat. Some states may require me to take the "law" portion of their DL exam, like CA. They only want to insure you have the basic understanding of traffic laws in their state.
My state doesn't require an auto/manual endorsement. That leads me to believe, there would be NO record of what type of transmission (manual) I originally tested with. Therefore I would not be restricted, even in CA.
The majority of transfers are simple. You surrender your old CDL, take the written portions they require. They give you a new one...from their state.
I wear glasses all the time. But I don't need glasses, they are no line bi-focals, clear glass on top. More than once, I have had to MAKE a Doctor correct my medical card, after passing an eye exam. The DMV has never restricted me. So I have no restrictions, and I never get asked about it, by any DOT or law enforcement officer.
DON'T give them anything. Make them askStroked F550 Thanks this. -
OH...by the way.
A CDL Class A, is an air brake endorsement. In all 50 states, Canada, and Mexico.
It doesn't say airbrake...because it's the standard. Class A = air brakeStroked F550 Thanks this. -
thanks danc694U I was worried that CA would give me a restriction but AZ is the same way they don't have an auto/manual endorsement. After your posts my nerves are a little bit more calmed down lol.
My understanding is class A is air brake until you take the driving test then they can restrict it at least in the great state of CA
I will definitely not give them anything they must ask
