hello, I am currently attending a school here in my city that is done in partneship with the county of education. It's free training to get your CDL, but in return you work for them in the warehouse loading and also driving the load's.
I am wondering what companies I may be able to work with. I'm figuring on doing otr for about 6 months and see from there.
Some of the companies I've been looking at swift(yes, I know I know. Don't need any comentary on how horribile you think they are), Schnieder if I can get on with a driver trainer since their school is closed, Crete,Roehl,Gordon(GTI).
Also know of MTC(May trucking), seen some people talk about maverick, but I haven't looked into them yet.
So who would you think I would be able to get with out here in Cali, since most of those companies are out of state based. I don't see too many people from Cali here.
I have a family and I know that I may not see them that much, I will have to sacrafice 6-12 months so I can find a local or dedicated run.
Thanks for any info.
hello from california

I don't believe that Maverick, Crete, or Rohel hire from California. But it could be that they were off our list because my hubby had a DUI. I have also heard that Schneider wasn't hiring newbies from California right now either. GTI runs up and down 5, so you are in a great place for them. Systems/TWT also hires from Sacto, but I am not giving a recomendation for them, just stating a fact. May has a terminal right there in Woodland. You will find plenty of other companies with yards in the Stockton/Lathrop area. So are you doing your training with Food Link?
-
Yes,I am. Are you from sac also?
It seems like a very good program, I am in my second week.
I called roehl and they don't hire out here, niether maverick. Saia has a yard in sac, but they need a year experience. I really liked the idea of roehl has with the 7/3 plan. Anyone know if anyone in Cali has anything like that? -
Hey there, I just finished up my school with TDA, over there on florin perkins, they train your for swift, I just went down to the orientation(swifts), and it seems like they aren't as bad as everyone says they are...SEEMS, that way
. Seems like it will be a good company to work for, remember youve gotta just have a doorway to get your otr experience, so youve got a shot at a different company, or just to drive local later on. 20,000 trucks, swift is bound to have a lot more messups than a company with 10,000 trucks you know? It's gonna happen. Maybe you should go talk with someone in lathrop about swift, and see if you like what they have to say about it! GTI really peaks my interest for some reason, Ill probably see if I can talk with them next year - Best of luck

I'm from a little town up in the hills about an hour from Sac. My hubby went with Western Pacific Truck School.
-
So you're gonna drive for swift, I was looking at them but dont like the 13 month contract that you have to sign.
I'm very tempted to do it, but u know... Just a little cautious.
So how was the training at TDA....?
Leannamarie, How did ur husband like Western pacific? -
He was happy with Western Pacific. He did his 4 weeks, passed his test the first try. He had a friend go with Western. That friend went with Interstate and drives an autoshift and is now stuck there; he forgot how to shift a standard.
-
Haha, trust me cali, I dont like the contract either...but in my case they're paying for my school, so its kind of a trade off, whereas you're going to have your cdl before you went to them...did you talk to them, and ask if you had to sign the contract, even if they didnt fund your cdl? I thought that was kind of the deal with the contract in the first place. Training with TDA was a lot of fun, made a few good friends there, and the instructors are all awesome, very good teachers. The yard itself sucks, its all dirt and potholed and stuff, which is ridiculous. Come to think of it the machines werent in very good shape either, I guess it was just a fun environment for me to be in for a couple weeks. The bookwork part of it was very good though, the teacher helps you out a lot.
I would say ask Swift if youd still have to sign a contract with them even if you already are liscenced, If you havent already and go from there!
