Well you have a 1987 motor crammed into a 1975 359 dump truck.

Heck someone offered the owner 12k about 5 years ago. He told him that he did not posess enough money to own that truck...lol

    Oxbow and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

If anyone runs an 871 or 892, I am curious of your fuel mileage. Great engines. I always liked that each injector is it's own pump. They do have a low pressure, gear driven lift pump, but they last almost forever. Very little there to break down, aside from real mechanical problem. I guess that's why they have legendary dependability.

They also were brilliantly engineered. 71 series parts interchange from 271 to a 1271 and beyond. 53 and 92 series also.

But the cummins big cam is a more modern 4 stroke mechanical engine, the same block as it's electronic brother, the n14. Also has a simple injection system, but with a high pressure pump. Very inexpensive to rebuild.

Not a cat guy- they do run well, but the parts are insanely expensive, and that distributor type injection pump will leave you dead on the road, and is big $$$ compared to the other systems.

The hardest part of working on the detroit is setting the rack.

The hardest part of working on the big cam is following the sequence to set the injectors and the valves.

The hardest part of working on the caterpillar is paying the bill.
