Ok, where to start. Me and a friend of mine are looking to get a truck (not a tractor/trailer) like a dodge and a 5th wheel car trailer and haul cars on I-5 corridor and MT/ID. I was curious if anyone could give me some tips on where to start as far as do we need special insurace? what kind of licenses would we need? also what would be the best way to get contracts? Just call dealers or do private? Also this may be a dumb question but would this qualify as Commercial vehicle? (follow same rules as CDL drivers as far as drive time on/off duty restrictions). Also do you guys think this would be a succesfull way to go. Right now I am a hostler/mechanic my buddy is a delivery driver, just thought this would be something to look into. I appreciate any advice. Thank you
Hoping someone can help me out

google Hot SHot forums. there is a few out there aimed specificly at hot shotting and you'd probably get more accurate informatin. I looked into it briefly and there is some differences between hot shoting and trucking

If your over 10,001 pound's CGVW you are subject to DOT reg's,..including hours of service...Chances are good you could even load to over 26,000 pound's CGVW,..which would require a class A CDL,...
To be legal,..You will need US DOT#'s,..authority,...Ect....
I looked into a 1 ton and wedge before I bought my 10 car hauler,...and I thought that the operational expenses were close enough that I couldn't justify a 1 ton and wedge,....
On the flip side ,...If I had bought a 1 ton and wedge,....at least I would still have a 1 ton for personal use,...Wanna but a 10 car hauler????... -
Automobiles are considered hazmat for insurance classification . They don't require placarding or a hazmat endorsement but they do require $1 million liability coverage rather than $750,000 for general freight to obtain authority . It is very difficult to load a 3 car wedge and not exceed the 26,000 lbs. which would require a CDL A and IFTA registration . You'd be better off with a 40' or 48' stepdeck which would allow you more options on your loads .
If you want to support 2 drivers , get 2 trucks . One person can make a decent living with a 1 ton but there's not enough income for 2 people .
The rate for transporting cars is very low . You're better off to find a local base customer with loads under 12,000 lbs ..
Medicineman has the right idea but you'll get directed to a better forum by googling hotshothauling . -
UM. All the major auto makers are about to file chapter 11. When you get this all figured out do you think you will be able to stay busy?

Good luck to you

Now granted the auto hauling industry is in the tank but there is still a whole bunch of them up and down the road every day -
OK. Never argue with a fool, you might not know the difference. (That is supposed to be a joke!) There are lots of people hauling cars and go to USHIP and ask around there. This is a competitive business. If you haul a cat and get paid $4 you must have DOT/MC insurance and all the other jibber-jabber.
