That may work for an O/O who has to pay out of his pocket, but for companey/lease drivers not so much. They figure that in the freight bill and it should not come out of the drivers pocket as lang as the paper work is turned in. As far as what you said on the reciever ordering the product and them having to u/l it we all agree on that and thats the way it should be, but for now we all have to play the lumper game and I dont see it changing anytime soon. It's too much of a cash cow for the recievering docks and they dont have to hire and pay ins, med, retierment, etc for extra employees because the lumpers are all contract workers and the docks get a cut off the lumper fees.
recievers that will make you pay first before they will unload you.

They're getting a cut of their own money back. If they didn't have a lumper fee, the shipper would possibly take it off the price, and it'd more than compensate for hiring the extra employees, as there'd be fewer taking a cut.

I'm taking you guy's talking about being an O/O becuase i just write out a comcheck
-
That would be cool if they would hire employees and not charge a u/l fee. That could help a few more american familey out
-
Do you have to provide a receipt for the lumper after you write that ComCheck? With many companies they treat the ComCheck like an advance, then a reimbursement when you turn in the receipt.
I am curious how this works out for O/O's, though. Does your broker say you'll have a lumper charge? Is it added onto the total freight bill or is it just factored in as a higher CPM? If factored in and you can unload yourself, do you get to pocket the lumper fee? -
i unload my own freight since i usually have 4-6 stops per load. i just make out a receipt for every stop. ill usually ask the lumpers first what they would charge me and just do it myself. most i have made on a load was around 800. when im done ill tell the broker how much i paid and get paid for it along with the rate.
personally ive never been to a walmart or supervalu/savalot an had to pay before it was unloaded. i know there were a couple places but i cant remember what they were at the time. with walmarts if i have a 10 pallet or less load and i know its the beginning of a shift ill tell them ill break it down. most of the time they will do it for me.
never been a company driver but im assuming you would just turn in a receipt so they know what you spent it on and didnt lie to them why you needed it.Last edited: Nov 19, 2008

Here's an idea that was told to me by another driver one afternoon while we were waiting to deliver. True or false, I thought it was a funny story though it would have obvious repercussions had it really happened.
He had been to another delivery dock that wanted him to pay a lumper. Refusing to play by their rules he informed them that if they didn't unload his trailer he would call his company and tell them that the load had been rejected. Knowing that they would not authorize him to haul it back over a thousand miles to the shipper and the shipper would just write off the entire load anyway it would become worthless and have to just be dumped. He told them that they would not get their load and that he would take it to small retailers throughout the city and sell off the entire load in small pieces, pocketing the cash and they would have to reorder another truck load and have to wait for another driver to deliver it. I guess he persuaded them to just unload his truck and set him on his way.
Neat story even if it isn't true
