Okay, I want to see the actual part of USC Title 49 where it says that it is illegal to carry in a CMV.
I couldn't find said law in the USC Title 49 (except stuff related to aircraft, which is a whole 'nother can of worms)

As an Ex law-enforcement officer I know for a fact that it was illegal for me to carry my weapon to different states. The best ting to do is contact the states that you are driving in and see if they honor your permit
-
I searched http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/ and couldn't find anything.. If it indeed illegal, I'd like to see where..
I also just renewed my carry permit today and the booklet they give out "Firearms Safety, The Law and You" doesn't specify.
I also called our State Patrol and the officer I talked to said it was legal to carry in my truck, provided I had a permit. He wasn't sure about interstate travel. I will try to reach someone in the Commercial Vehicle division tomorrow.. -
What about rifles? I have a Kel Tec SU16C rifle that folds up to about 2 feet long. It's legal in NY and were are about as strict as you can find.
-
Rifles, for some reason, are not nearly as strictly regulated as handguns (go figure...rifles are much, much deadlier).
Course, you run into states with "assault weapons" bans, and a rifle that has the cosmetic features of a military rifle can get you into trouble. Again, research. And many states have laws specifying handguns vs. rifles...it gets complicated...and then some just say you can't have a loaded rifle...or whatever....
Watch magazines, too. Supposedly, in some of the more restricted states, a loaded magazine can count as a firearm...
Yes, I know it's absolute insanity, but you'd better do your research. And as much as I like military style rifles (AR-15s, AK clones, FAL clones, and such), they would seem to me to attract more attention from law enforcement vs. say, a wood stocked 12 gauge riot gun or "Daddy's .30-30 lever action rifle"... -
Yep, and I can kick some serious ^$$ with a levergun.
I once asked a cop what he'd rather face; a handgun that shoots one round at a time or a scattergun that throws nine .32 caliber balls all at once. He said the short gun, but he didn't make the rules. -
Before I could afford an AR-15, my go-to rifle was a Marlin 336 .30-30 that was fitted with the XS Sight Systems Ghost Ring aperture sights and "scout" rail. That's one slick combo if you are a shooter on a budget, or want a low profile fighting rifle...

well that info i posted was from a fed dot officer and he said its not legal so i am not going to argue with him. We are truck drivers {some of us} and he was a federal dot not state so he should know
-
I'm not questioning his belief that it's illegal.. But for my own personal reference I would like to see the law or some other legal reference to the fact.
As I found out today, no one person knows all the laws. If he is confident in his opinion, he should be able to quote a law or regulation, especially if he is in the position to write tickets to that effect. -
Well i am sure that he could if he had one of us pulled and trying to bust us. He is well known on this forum it is psanderson, you can ask him yourself i invited him to join our debate but he declined
