I started with a company that had small, medium and large trucks, started off in a 1ton, then moved into a 2 1/2 ton, then a 5ton, then a big truck...it took me about 3 or 4 years, but by the time I got to a rig, I had over 100 thousand miles under my belt, experience with loading and dispatchers, paperwork, customer service and how to drive and carry myself in a professional manner. All in all, the route I took gave me a better foundation than if I went to driving school, the schools only teach the basics( and from what I've seen sometimes not even that) nothing replaces experience, you may have to drive for a less than great company for a year or two, but by then you will have enough time under your wheels and enough time on the road to work for a good company and you will know who they are from talking to other drivers, also something I think is really important, is staying with one company if you can. It doesn't look good if you job hop every 6 months, I know if I train a guy who is in his early 20's and has 3yrs driving and has had 5 jobs, I am MUCH more suspicious of his skill level, and will keep him in training longer than i would a 23 year old who is on his second job because he has enough experience to do so. Just my 2 cents...for what it's worth

And once you start, stick with it. Don't take a year off and think you can come right back.
In the trucking industry, experience has an "expiration date"!!!!!!!!!

the reason it is so hard these days is "greed".but they put a spin on it and call it "insurance"....
They have found a way to make billions on the trucking industry since de-regulation...its very simple.and this is just another way to get the truckers money...
We call it in ny,(legal extorsion)... Thats it in a nut shell....
Pretty soon i am going to have to go and pay for a course to use my ladder and clean the leafs out of my gutters...i will then be a "certified ladder climber" with my tag on my sleeve.
Then i can dis-illusion myself and my" ego "and become an expert at telling people how to climb a ladder correctly...
Then i can go to be a trainer...a "certified trainer.."
then i can start my own school and charge millions for my new course...
Then i can get the government to back me and the insurance companies to back me,then i can grease there sweaty palms with all the student's money i manipulated them out of..
Then i can go on a crash course to market how to climb a ladder to sucess....lmao
sounds like a plan... -
lol scary but true.
