Okay, you guys make some good points about the broker's right to see your logs. Maybe I wasn't looking at it from any other point of view but my own.
We don't deal with brokers any more and haven't for several years.. We've been burned a few times by brokers who, if they didn't out and out lie to us, forgot to add a few details concerning the load. As in, you load on Monday for a two day trip and the customer won't take the load until Friday. You don't find this out until the truck calls you on Wednesday and all of a sudden the broker isn't returning your calls.
We've established our own customer base, some of them we've served for over twenty years, and just don't deal with brokers. We find them to be arrogant...as in "You'll never haul for us again" and our reply is "Good!"
Most of them, at least in our part of the country don't want to pay anything, either.
So...if worst comes to worst and we have to use a broker I guess I'll dial him in on our elog system. Grudgingly.

You say that like it's something that would upset me. :)

I retired out of this business once and I'm trying very hard to retire again.

While true i still cannot see the need for logs. A simple "do you use elogs" question should suffice. They don't need your last weeks customer info.

Heck saying it's the law and therefore ok is like saying we must send proof the tires are not bald or all the lights are working...

When a broker is in a pinch........Any/all of their requirements go out the window

But,Since most of the time.....Your NOT needed, They'll come up with anything and everything....Whether it makes sense or not.

Don't blame the Brokers though..........It's not their fault every Tom,Dick and Harry think the answer in transportation is "I'm getting my authority"

Let me explain from my experience.

Brokers are always trying to understand a business that they really have no experience in, driving trucks.

They tried cell phone tracking apps sent to drivers. That didn't go over well and brokers now have it as an option not a requirement.

Some brokers used to require DOT inspections to haul freight. That cost them some lost freight and now you don't see that anymore either.

Bottom line is its a new thing and its not going to last very long as they will find out in time

Many carriers and drivers will not be required to maintain ELD's, these carriers/drivers will not be out of compliance simply because they do not have ELD's.

Having ELD's do not make a carrier or driver compliant.

Likely this maneuver is simply a fishing expedition to obtain new shippers.

Cut me a check for $1500/day and I'll send you as many days logs as you paid me to send you. Not willing to pay me for my logs? Then I'm not willing to send them.

This scenario generally won't come into play where typical brokers and typical carriers need to hook up.

Furthermore, what broker wants to provide freight to an 18+ year old truck possibly held together [literally] with duct tape, baling wire, and luck?
