What I meant to say is that the waitress at the Clear Brook, Virginia (Winchester, Virginia; Exit 323, Interstate 81) is that 3/4's of all Flying J restuarants are closed from 1 am to 5 am daily NOT that the buffets are done away with. This particular Flying J in northwestern Virginia still has it's buffet, knock on wood.
The Carnesville, Georgia Flying J was where I saw the markings on the tile floor that looked like the foot print of the buffet area that used to be there.
The waitress told me I my hunch was right and that they did have a buffet but pulled it out a few months before that.
The reason for that particular Flying J may have been lack of business and the legal department Flying J lawyers trying to head of a potential lawsuit over fat, etc. in the Flying J food, etc.
So, now what I do is to peek inside and if I see that there is NO buffet at any given Flying J, I keep on going until I see a Golden Corral or Old Country Buffet and then pull over.
I certainly liked the buffets at the Flying J's and it's too bad that some buffets have been done away with.

It seems like everytime I get the buffet at Flying J most of the food is dried out, the gravy is crusted over, and the dinner rolls or corn bread is hard as a rock. Golden Corrall has a great buffet and their food is always fresh. Not sure how hey do it but I wish Flying J would find out. I think part of the trick is to stir the gravy, veggies, etc. from time to time and for Pete's sake don't put the rolls under a heat lamp!
But overall I still like stopping at Flying J because they are conveniently located, usually have a large parking lot, and they keep their facilities clean for the most part.
I was not aware of them getting rid of the buffet. I just finished a trip from LA to Pittsburgh, PA and stopped at 3 or 4 Flying Js. All had buffets.HFC Thanks this. -
the buffet at the hook is awful....and I have no clue what they make that brown stuff they call gravey out of but yuck! and did ya'll read the last edition of the LongHaul newsletter ? That woman that they hired that is supposed to have so much experience and how good the food is supposed to be.....has she ate at any of the TS we eat at? Flying J is wasting their money on this gal!

I mainly eat in truck. Usualy eat at a truck stop about once a week. I have enjoyed most meals at the Petros I have dined at.

Yes, the gravy does leave something to be desired at times. SO ... contact "the new sheriff in town" at the Flying J restuarant division and make her earn her keep. Tell her about the gravy and about other things that need to be tweaked to provide a better dining experience. She can't fix things if she doesn't know that they are broken.

Recently, I have seen at the Carmel Church, Virginia and the Clear Brook, Virginia Flying J's people to come out occasionally and stir items on the steam table. Yes, Golden Corral has good food and Flying J should take a few ideas from them. However, most GC's I have seen don't have truck parking on site or even nearby, so, that's a concern. The one I did see near Salisbury, North Carolina had two trucks parked on the residential street a few feet away and the local police probably would not be happy campers if they came across that.
It just happened to be on your recent trip from LA to Pittsburgh that you did not come across any Flying J's that had removed their buffets but I am guessing down the road, you will come across that situation. Also, on that trip did you come across any Flying J's that did not have their restuarant open twenty four hours a day?

By my guess, the cost annually for eating at a Flying J, once a day would be $5256.00 That's food, drink and a tip to the wait staff.
I kinda think that the powers that be at Flying J should not use the term "home cooked" because yes, you are right -- it's all production line food that does not have any chance to be like the vittles that Mom used to make.
The preparation and presentation rules and regulations are probably on laminated posters back in the kitchen area.
