Actually just looked up this number and seeing it as 49, so not sure where I got the 55 number from.
the problem is, though, that the number continues to get larger. Biggest concern being that the industry is about to see a huge drop off of drivers due to retirement, and the young folks have no interest in the profession.
Edit: ATA has the age at 49, Bureau of Labor Statistics has the age at 55
