release the brakes... stop on the side... un hook incase a fire does start... man the extenguisher...

wave to the guys honking and waving....

release the brakes... rehook.... adjust brakes if needed...

continue down the road

and

for two weeks.... keep leaning over and pushing the button to make sure you didn't forget again...

apparently a first uh-ohhh makes ya a bit paranoid...

 

Stop where it is safe and do a thorough inspection.
That means get on the ground underneath and check each shoe and drum for cracks, breaks and broken parts.

I had an entire break chamber break away from the axle on a trailer a couple of months ago and was hanging down by the hose and push rod.

I don't quite understand how you can drive more then a couple of feet with the e-brakes on though. When taking off in a truck it is supposed to move freely, even with a heavy load. It always feels different. Just taking your time and paying attention will help.

 

well at least you didn't do what one of our guys did. He grabed an empty set of hoppers and drove them out of the yard onto the street with everybody yelling and chasing after him. about 4 minutes later he comes back to the yard with everyone of them tires blowed out asking me whos fault that was. he don't work here no more.

 

Semi trucks do not have emergency brakes.

He must drive a powerfull truck ;I've never been able to take off with trailer brakes set.Or the brakes were really out of adjustment.I've dragged them with frozen brakes on icy pavement though.

 

Stop on level ground and chock the wheels or shut off the engine and park in gear. Do not set hot brakes while parking. The drums may crack while cooling.

 

If the brakes were smoking and not the tires then the brakes were out of adjustment.

If it was the tires then the load was very light or tlr empty

 

I have a habit of checking the tires on the trailer to see if they are rolling when I first grab a trailer that has been sitting. Especially in the cold weather.
