Or he waits to book a load before he starts his clock, rather than start the clock, go deliver, then start looking for a load.
That's a fairly effective way to be available for loads that need expedited service and will pay for it.

 

I picked up in ND yesterday.
I pick up there quite a bit and they load pretty fast. There’s usually 5 or 6 trucks there. When I arrived I was the only one there. I asked the shipping clerk if they were slow with outbound freight and he said no. He said they had a packed shipping schedule and the trucks just were not there at their appointment times. He said they were running out of room in the freezer because the trucks were not showing up to pick up. Weather wasn’t a problem it was actually nice out.

 

I delivered last night, I was the first to make it out of four trucks in nearly 2 days, weather was not a factor. I had empty racks on for RAM Truck body panels, they are out of those racks and have no place to safely store production. Everyone is getting shut down due to hours of service, this is an 8 hour run. The only reason I made it was the fact I can run 70+ mph, and did. I had 3 minutes left on my clock when I arrived at the gate to check in. Needless to say, they were happy to see me.

 

This thread is interesting and educational for me as I am a relatively new O/O.
Large corporations coupled with .gov =(Oligarchs) have usurped control and authority over the transportation sector. How? Mainly through taxation, legal channels and insurance subsidies.Why? Because our economy is dependent upon CHEAP freight (we collapse without it). Our economy is also dependent upon CHEAP oil. I believe .gov took the bang out of the Bakken oil run; It takes app. $20 more per barrel to extract Bakken Shale oil, mainly because of fracking. That doesn't lend it's self to CHEAP freight. So now instead of the oil companies taking the low hanging fruit, you have .gov hiking tax's to benefit themselves and their four wheeling constituents while subsidizing large corp's =Oligarchy. Don't forget, we all need CHEAP freight :>)
.Gov then continued to tighten the 'DOT/insurance noose' coupled with the 'lack of subsidy noose' around those pesky independents so REAL LIFE freight rates wouldn't see they light of day. Once the independent roster drops below 50%, it's a wrap. There will always be independents but you will only get the scraps the Oligarchs don't want or could care less about. They could care less about your struggles as an O/O, in fact, they seek your annihilation as you don't represent the collective.
So, I don't see things changing a whole lot and if it does we are all in deep ####. If you wanna hang out in the big boy sand box be prepared to play their way.
So what am saying here? It's my belief that if you want to continue operating independently that you will have to get used to; Unreasonable DOT abuse; Excessive Insurance rates; Negative public pressure; Free Range Litigation, Draconian emission mandates; Over taxed fuel; Misrepresentation of fuel tax's; Non existent regulation on Demurrage; Rising mechanical and parts cost; Unscrupulous brokers; Unscrupulous shippers and receivers; Whatever the hell else is coming down the pike; And oh, did I mention CHEAP FREIGHT?
Get used to it or get out. You the driver/Owner Operator are the last one to the trough.

I think if you think it’s that bleak now in the best of times you’re going to have a rough road to travel when it goes back down. Conspiracy theories are there to help people find something to blame in the bad times... being the ‘the system is keeping us down’ guy in the good times is a bad look.

EDIT: Obviously there is a very strong ‘but I’m black’ exception. You are allowed to complain forever because in your case it’s not a conspiracy theory. No it won’t do any good.

 

This is all true. I’m sure a hefty price increase is coming to the grocery stores. Unfortunately those contracts still don’t seem to have shown up yet.

 

No, but I'm a get it done kinda guy when properly motivated.

That load has ugly written all over it. No one I know would go within 10 miles of that thing.

Most guys can see the desperation and would smell the blood in the water. After reading some of the discription it starts to smell like #### in the water instead. That equals $ for me.

It doesn't show miles or locations but looks like a $10k load to me?

It would be tomarow morning before they finally agreed to my terms anyway. Lol

 

I run short trips an watch for loads to "snipe". I almost always end my week with an easy 20 hours left on my clock.

Not this week though. Lol

 

Mom called me the other day, she wanted to know where the groceries were at the grocery store. Mom shops religiously at the same store at roughly the same time every Saturday. She said nothing she normally buys was available, even her brand of milk was missing. This is a Meijer's store, like a Super Walmart. I asked if this has happened before, she was upset and said no. I asked how it was last week during the cold and snow, she said all was normal then. This past Saturday, weather was not a factor. This was in Canton MI.

I have been hearing similar things on the radio and from other trucking sites. Produce is rotting on docks, etc. I know on my end, automotive, parts are delayed or not showing at all. Rates have reflected it, runs that would normally pay $3 a mile are now up to $4 and even more. I know we have been turning down freight left and right. Running us pretty hard right now due to the ELD, no more take it easy and get the job done in a safe and efficient manner. Now it is balls to the wall and hammer down. Worst part, I keep winding up in places with no facilities or near a truck stop. Getting stinky in the cab.

 

You do realize it’s a certainty that if you had gone over those 3 minutes you had left on your clock, you would have A. Instantly crashed or B. Fell asleep from exhaustion. The HOS are scientific and not some random study by morons helping the megas. GO ELOGS!!!! (Yes this is sarcasm)
