Been a member for this site since 2014. Also been driving with Mclane Northwest in WA for 12 years. I make before taxes 80-90k depending on what routes I decide to take or should I say bid on depending on seniority. So my take home every 2 weeks is 2,600 to 2,900. It is also 100% touch freight up & down the ramp. My body is starting to tell me to do something easier. I am also a family man, and being with family is keen to me.
Now I’m wondering. Will I be able to make the same amount or more after expenses just staying regional as an O/O, or will I have to drive coast to coast to make the same amount after expenses or more?? I’ve been doing my homework on the steps to get my own tractor etc, but I was trying to stay regional and make the same, if not, more. Is regional possible or should I just stay my butt to being Mclane’s B***? Hahaha.
Company for 12 years ???

2 make the 90k regional you are gonna need some direct customers with your own authority. Don’t think leasing onto somebody will get ya the money you need trying 2 stay close. And more then likely you will still end up running farther out than you want. At least in my neck of the woods that’s how it is with company’s. Even with my own authority I have experimented with running a contiguous state triangle off load boards and doesn’t work. Ever. Have to be able 2 take the best freight 2 the best areas 2 really run your truck correctly unless you secure some direct customers willing 2 Pay 4 your truck and skill. Just my experiences in my region. Food 4 thoughtscoopAstack Thanks this.

In the Mainland yes, but not in your woods

Yes, specially in this market.
To me, when someone asks whether they should buy a truck the answer is always yes. I just don't see why anyone would work this hard and sacrifice so much for something that's not theirs. Do your homework and realize that this is a business and the first year you will have to make compromises.
Quick numbers from my first year as o/o
Revenue
$2.20/Mile all miles
Operating Cost
$1.17/MILE
Plus .50C/Mile Driver Pay (Im the Driver)
Total Operating Cost $1.67/Mile
Profit
50C/Mile Driver
.53C/ Mile Company ( Im the Company)
Total $1.03/Mile
So to make 1300/1450 a week you would have to drive 1262/1407 Miles a week.
My numbers are from someone out of the midwest. Your experience may differ being from the westcoast.
Here's a link with a lot of information that was helpful to me as a first time o/o
