My wife and I have been approved to buy a Volvo soon and I’m wondering if I need to talk to an accountant and set up a business entity before I do or if that can wait until we get back for hometime. When we told our driver manager we were quitting to buy a truck and sign back on as O/O he told us make sure we have all our ducks in row. When we asked which ducks he had no clue and said the company can not give advice and for us to do research online. It would be nice if there were a neat checklist of everything that needs to be done and when and in which order. I have yet to figure it all out but when I do I’m going to post it here. Anyhow. What do I absolutely have to have in order before I purchase this truck? We were going to take a month off and figure all this out but I was worried that would make it harder to qualify for a purchase if not currently employed. We went home over Christmas but no accountants were working over the holidays and there wasn’t much time to research or plan with eye and dentist appointments and spending Christmas with the kids. I would have liked to plan this out better but my wife is at the end if her rope with the frustrations of being a company driver and needs the freedom.

I think all you need is an LLC and an EIN not sure though. I see this question a lot and I don't believe it is ever answered clearly
Midnightrider909 Thanks this. -
Which is why I’m trying again. Ive heard conflicting things before. I’m buying it in my name so it wouldn’t be owned by the LLC, at least initially, since I don’t have any commercial credit. I have also heard LLCs are useless and a waste of money since we are driving the truck ourselves and will get sued no matter what. When I get all this figured out I’m going to post it for all future owner operators. My company is been absolutely no help whatsoever. Probably some legal bs prevents them.

Midnight, do a little research on llc and taxes on this site, some have written a few convincing posts on limiting your tax liability through an llc. I'm the one who says it will not limit your liabilities if you get into an accident or other legal issues.
As for your wife being at the end of her rope, too bad because you need to get your ducks in a row and I would have thought before you got to the truck shopping, you would have had the more important part already done. -
I just spent 10 minutes there and can’t find the checklist. Do you know what section is it? Do I have to become a member to see it?

If you don’t know what the ducks are its hard to get them in a row. The few days of the month that I am home I have the kids full time, medical appts, and home repairs to do and everything else that I have neglected for the past four weeks. This really can’t be all that hard. Its amazing I can’t get a clear answer to such a simple question.

That's the right answer: www.OOIDA.com is a business website for the owner-opertor.

It appears that I need a really good accountant with trucking acumen. Can anyone recommend an accountant that they do business or have done business with in the past that are especially good and know their stuff?
