What is so hard about adding some sort of speed-sensitive lockout [and retract] switch to trucks with lift PTO's? These things seem to happen dozens of times each year. Especially today now that we're putting inexperienced drivers in all sorts of critical solo driving positions. Some turn out very badly as in this case.

There is a device that automatically activates the brakes whenever i engage the pto. Point is you will not be rolling while your hydraulics pto is on. It came with my stinger. When i installed pto in my 7 carhauler, i learned that this safety device is an option. With cottrell carhaulers it is mandatory. It would have saved this drivers life. Rip driver

It's not. I've driven a few trucks that it won't accept input from the accelerator while the pto is engaged but this type of truck may have needed it on all the time like a ready mix truck

Yes but the pto would not necessarily have to be engaged to get you in trouble if the hydraulic cylinder was filled while you were stopped doing whatever, then drove away. it needs to both disengage and release the pressure as soon as 5 mph is detected

I know back when I was running end dump, we had to lift and pull forward slowly, at the same time.

I guess maybe I just cant understand how this happens so often. I drove roll off for years and the center of gravity and handling characteristics of a truck with the bed raised should have been enough to let a guy who was driving know something was wrong.

For what its worth a simple light on the dash and annoying buzzer could have saved this guys life. Then again if it was anything like my old truck it may have had them and was long ago broken and not repaired.

We had at least two bridge strikes locally this summer, one on the interstate.

The bottom line is you need to pay attention though. That's the only thing that's going to stop you or somebody from ending up in a bag.

unless the mirrors are facing the drivers, they could care less. it's all about having neat hair while driving.

With the body up, the shadow over the cab changes. But yeah, that much infatuation they deserve to wreck. grin
