I've read threw several of the TMC threads here trying to answer some quesitons I have, most of them got answered....Thanks yall! I do still have a few left unanswered and hope yall can fill me in.

I know it's a nasty habit, but I smoke. Is there a policy against smoking in the trucks? While driving of course, I wouldnt think about smoking in the sleeper.

I live in central Texas (just north of Austin) and noticed there's a few otheres here from this area, I would prefer to be on a regional or local type run, Does TMC still have these? I read that they got rid of their Texas only runs.

A little on my background to set up for the next question:
I hired on to drive a Pumpkin back in 05. I went threw their 'academy' and got my CDL and hit the road as a team driver with my Dad. We drove together for 6 months then I got sent to Iraq for a year with my Army Reserve unit. I got back home and didnt want to go back on the road, worked a deal with the Big Orange that got me out of repaying the total cost of their 'academy'. Then I went to Afghanistan for another year. Got home and started doing construction and mechanic work. I wanted to drive again and hired on with Werner, that lasted 4 days.........
I want to get back into driving and I want to drive for TMC......SO............

Since my experience is so limited and a few years ago, do you think I'll be considered an 'experienced driver' or a student. I'm confident driving large vehicles (did it in the Army too) but will be a little rusty with the shifting and gear recovery. I never had a problem with loging, HOS, map reading or trip planning, but a little refresher would never hurt.

Will the orientation cover any of this as part of the equipment familiarization?

Do you actually take the trucks out of the yard and go through the gears or just piddle around making figure eights and some backing?

I love 379's and would hope to be placed in one, does TMC allow any 'customization' to the trucks? I'm not talking 8" bull hauler stacks and grill guards or anything, but simple things like a small sticker in the window. Easily reversable things........the Big Orange wouldnt even let me put my "Support our Troops" magnet on the sleeper vent.

Do the trucks have APU's and do they allow power converters?

Where is the closest terminal to the Austin Texas area? If I need service done to my truck is it scheduled at a terminal or will they try to get it done during my TAH at a local Pete dealer?

And lastly....for now anyways....once hired and on the road, what kind of training is available? I've never driven in snow or ice, does TMC offer any kind of winter driving training? Anything else of that nature? How often, if at all, do you go in for evaluations?

Sorry for all the quesitons, but it's 0200 sunday mornin and I havent been to bed yet. I'd call a recruiter but dont think they'd be answering the phones just now LOL. Besides, If I'm just writing things as they come to me and if I wait I'll forget them all. Thank for taking the time to read this and help me out. Take care.

The closest terminal will be Joplin, MO. I'm pretty sure on that, but Rawlco or eckz would know for sure. They only train at the two bangn mentioned though. There was one guy in DH's class that was going to get straight into his own truck. Everyone else had two weeks(experienced class) with a trainer.

Well Bangn answered quite a few of your questions, I'll just fill in a bit.

You will probably start off in Line Haul where you are home 46 out of 52 weekends. It is also likely that you will pass through Austin a couple of times a week going back and forth to Laredo TX.

I am guessing that a recruiter will call you a student. You will have to check with them to be sure.

Sorry no customization is allowed. Some drivers do get away with magnets and window clings but make sure they are hidden when they get near a terminal. Once you get caught and warned once you had better not get caught doing the same thing again or safety will have a FIT.

No APU's, and no power inverters are allowed. You can get anything you need in a 12 volt version anyway.

Peterbilts never do full services on weekends. Now if you are lucky you can get it scheduled for the Austin Pete on a friday or a monday so that will give you some more time at home.

The closest Terminal is going to be Laredo Texas, but that is only a drop yard, freight reload yard, and trailer shop. There is talk of putting a full tractor shop in down there but I am not sure if that is actually going to happen. The closest full service terminal is Joplin MO and I guess you would visit there during the week easily enough.

Well if you start now you will get to drive on ice and snow while out with your trainer. That is the advantage over starting in the summer.

we don't do evaluations, but all your stats are kept track of and if anything is high, like excessive idle time, you may have to explain.

Thanks for those answers yall. I appreciate it. I called a recruiter today and got some more answers from them. Something I found out is that my experiance is too long ago, so I have to find a refresher course to take. From there I'll basicly be a student with 2 week orientation and 5 weeks with a trainer. I dont mind that at all, but what bugs me is trying to find a way to make ends meet for almost 2 months making $350 a week. That after paying out of pocket for refresher course.

All things I'm willing to do because I strongly believe it will be worth it once I'm in my own truck.

Something I forgot to ask the recruiter though is about the "Apprentice program" with the GI bill. What exactly is that, what does it consist of, what does it do for TMC, and what does it do for me?

While I'm on the subject, does anybody know if there are TMC approved schools for the refresher course and if I can use the GI Bill for that aswell?

    Military Veterans

TMC has a long history of hiring current and former military personnel into every job category that we have. Military veterans will find that TMC genuinely appreciates the skills, knowledge and attributes learned during your time in service to our country. We have found that the TMC way of doing things is something that people with military experience are really at home with. In recognition of this and your service to our country, TMC has created a VA approved driver apprenticeship program that allows eligible military personnel to draw GI Bill education benefits. This makes it even easier to get started in a new career driving heavy duty trucks.
    Apprenticeship Program
Veterans who qualify for the TMC Apprenticeship Program, who are eligible for VA education benefits and who are just starting a new career in trucking can use those benefits for up to two years at TMC. TMC operates an approved driver apprenticeship program that allows eligible military veterans to use their VA education benefits to help pay for training and make the transition into a new career smoother and financially less stressful.
For those eligible veterans, getting into our professional truck driver apprentice program involves just a few simple steps.
    • Complete an on-line TMC Driver Application
    • Follow-up on your application by contacting a TMC recruiter
    • Once your application is approved, attend an approved truck driving school to obtain your Class A CDL (We can refer you to TMC approved schools)
    • After completing your CDL training, schedule yourself for a TMC Orientation
    • Fill out Apprenticeship forms at Orientation
The TMC Apprenticeship Program is administered through the State of Iowa and all VA forms must be submitted through the offices in Des Moines, IA.
It normally takes 10 - 13 weeks for the VA to determine eligibility and issue the first check. Your first check should include an amount retroactive to the beginning of your training with TMC. The amount you will receive will depend on factors such as the length of your service and type of service. Your payments will come directly to you f rom the VA and are tax free.

here you go this may help you :biggrin_255:

Thank you, I read that on their website. Maybe I'm just not able to read between lines or need things spelled out for me, but I dont think I understand just what it is.

I have a class-A CDL and wont be paying for training, so other than that what does being an "Apprentice" mean? Once I get into my own truck I'm not a regular driver....just an "Apprentice"? Sorta sounds like I'd still be considered a student or something.....not a real driver. Am I seeing this wrong?

So If I sign up for this I'm getting money from my GI bill, but not using it to pay back for training.....that sounds a bit dishonest to me. Am I reading into that wrong too?

Kinda sucks it takes 10-13 weeks to take effect and recieve any money, the first 7 weeks are when I'd need the money most as I'd be taking a nasty paycut untill I got rolling on my own.

well you really need to talk to a recruiter if you dont have one call laura she is awesome. If you have experiance but it is old they may make you recertify but if you have verafiable exp in semi driving they may make you do a 2 week orientation instead of a 1 week that most exp drivers do. I am sorry i cant help you more but i know laura can so give her a call before you start waiting 13 weeks. I read that and thought it was kind of crazy thats a long time. It would be 20 weeks before you get your own truck. An apprentice is a rookie in orientation and you would probably go out with a trainer for 5 weeks but when you get your own truck you are a driver making normal pay. I hope this helps a little.

The GI Bill is for all of your expenses, not just tuition. There is nothing out of the ordinary receiving the money and pocketing it as reimbursement, hell don't you remember TAD and seps pay? Not unusual at all for the gov to take an exceptionally long time to process any kind of claim. I just wish I was still in the window for my GI Bill, paid into it and never used it.
