Just do one and join a consortium. And do it like a week before "hiring" yourself.... just as if you were hiring someone. You wouldn't test someone in January and hire them in Feb. It would be pretty much back to back and that is what your new entrant audit officer will like to see.

I'm going through this same thing right now. If you've been enrolled for the previous 12 months and won't have a lapse of more than 30 days enrollment, my paperwork says you're not required to have a pre-employment screen. HOWEVER...that also assumes that your previous employer will fill out the request form for drug test history and get it back to you in time (hahaha), and depending on who you worked for, good luck there. I'm going through the OOIDA consortium and will just take my test at the end of the protest period for my authority. It's a hassle, but if you don't have that on file before you're ready to go, it becomes a bigger deal. That's my understanding of it, anyway.

I’ll attempt to get the drug history from my current employer. I think I had a random early last year even.

There will be a lot of documentation you will need to have in place and provide for the FMCSA safety auditor when they do your first safety audit. This a checklist of items they asked for before I had my first safety audit with them. If you haul hazmat, the required documentation will need to be provided as well.

And yes, you will have to provide the required Driver Qualification Records on yourself, including an application of employment that shows all employers for the past 3 years including drug testing.

Lucky I’ve worked at the same place for 5, so the previous 3 years is easy. Won’t be hauling hazmat at least for now. Doesn’t seem like there’s enough money in it for the hoops one has to go through.
When you listed hours of service do you mean logs? -

This is the documentation binder I assembled and brought to the safety audit. Needless to say, I sailed right through it. Lady auditor told me that no one had ever shown up to one of her audits with an organized binder like that LOL

My wife is going to be doing the paperwork, and she’s a freak about organization. I’ll probably be alright when it’s audit time.

She seemed focused on the Driver Qualifications Section, including the drug consortium stuff more than anything else. Maintenance records were a close second.
