Because they need a job? Companies can require one because employees may be doing something that's physical, this can result in a "DOT" medical pre hire to weed out potential workmans compensation claims.

    Because they have to!

Anyone designated by Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations as a “safety-sensitive employee” is subject to DOT drug & alcohol testing.
    This includes the following industries:

    • Aviation – the FAA
    • Commercial Motor Carriers – the FMCSA
    • Maritime – the USCG
    • Pipeline – PHMSA
    • Railroads – FRA
    • Transit – FTA
      ----------------------------------------------
It is not only "truck drivers" !!!

I am also under one of the other above categories.

Would you submit to a fingerprint background check to get a driver license without HAZMAT? Would you use a backhoe to dig a hole to plant a seed? Would you use a hammer for a push tack? I think you see my point. DOT tests are overkill when not used specifically for FMCSA. There's a reason it's called for in required situations only.

I really wish people would develop critical thinking skills. I know one employer that sends non DOT testing through the same process he does required testing because he has already paid a fee to the labs and finds it silly to pay extra for seperate testing. The process for getting the sample is almost the same. You pee in a cup the collector fills out a form and you sign it. In fact most clinics that do FMCSA testing collections do all of it. The only real difference is the lab has specific rules to follow in regard to DOT testing.
