Why are there so many threads about drugs, drug tests and criminal convictions regarding new drivers? Is there really that many new drivers that have to worry about passing a drug test and/or have convictions for serious crimes wanting to enter the industry?

What is it about the trucking industry that draws these types of individuals to it? Is the drug problem amongst new drivers that bad that new drivers drop like flies during newhire orientations?

More like what’s happening in society? People are on pain pills, weed, meth, etc. if they tested all jobs the way professional drivers are tested, you might be surprised.

Yes.... Cuz if you're not on drugs, or have a record there must be something wrong with you.

It is a change in our society. When I was in school we had a handful of convicts who served their sentences and got out needing to start over in life. Trucking was it. No problems really. They were good and all passed.

Society changed since the 60's there was some drugging and drinking etc as well as the so called sexual revolution etc. Since the war on drugs started back in the Reagen or Carter Administration (Actually probably back further than that...) the cartels started pushing drugs into the USA, the illegal kind. Now the fathers did drugs, had children and finally the children grew old enough to do drugs which now are become legal in some states for either Rec USE, Medical use or both. But NOT LEGAL under Federal Law because it's a schedule one drug.

    Now... There is a TWIST.

People have been abusing pain killers because they could go to work and not worry about tests for specifically that. Now as of Jan 1 there will be tests for that. As people are abusing the stuff, get kicked out and turn to street heroin because it's very cheap for a while etc to get the same relief from withdrawal symptoms.

    Again. Society.

In fact Immodium AD which is for anti diarrhea is being targeted this week by the FDA for removal from the US Market because people by the millions learned that it contains a opiate receptor drug in it's active indrediant. That used to actually be a schedule 5 drug as of the late 70's era. But it's no longer a sch 5 or a regulated controlled drug. It's over the counter. Taken in enough tablets users can get high. (As well as killing the intestines and choke off the blood supply eventually killing them through Septis and organ failure because they literally get full of it.)

Drug abusers suffering withdrawals have specifically used or using Immodium to fight the symptoms in the first 10 days which are seriously vicious and strong.

    Again, society in action.

What's next? Thought Crimes? Sex offenders? ANY offending person? Who the hell knows. The more people find something that is illegally very good to do for one reason or another, the more the Government cracks down on the things that come up. And interfere with being cold stone sober in trucking. In the name of public safety they say.

Again. Society. You, you and you. Not all of you. But some of you. There have been posts here actually advocating doing drugs while driving a 18 wheeler. I don't know about you but it's the worst thing anyone can do with a 40 ton semi. Until they find something else to do.

I can go on. But after I am dead and gone, truckers will find something else to get into and the Government will slowly and surely take it away. *Shrugs.

It is nothing but disrespect for the profession; Every job counselor out there insists trucking is a job anyone can do.

Add to that the fake news about a 'shortage of truck drivers.'

So every idiot that can't hold down a 9-5 because of their irresponsibility, thinks they can escape big brother watching their every move by climbing in a truck driving miles away from the boss. I mean all you have to do is drive; they did fine at that, until their license got taken away.

Marijuana is legal in a lot of states now,
So a lot of people who can legally smoke pot will have questions about drug testing and what not before starting the journey to get their CDL.

Not every drug user is an addict and unfit to ever have a CDL.

But some are addicts and wil never stop using and shouldn’t have a CDL.

Technically wrong. Federal law trumps state law, so federal law states Marijuana is illegal in the U.S.A. This means it is illegal in every state and every territory. However, if you want to get into a political discussion, we can talk about why certain states believe they are not subject to federal law. But, that aside, I believe those who believe they don’t have to obey federal laws are soon to be in for a rude awakening.
