Looking to make a grill for my 2012 Coronado glider need pros and cons of using a more open design 75% flow throu space expanded metal vs punched sheet of stainless 40% flow throu will more flow help cooling or just cause more drag due to too much air getting in engine bay I have heard more closed grill inserts help with air flow around the truck is it true thanks in advance for any reply any one who has used a more closed design on a kw or pete seen any spike in temps on a hot day pulling a heavy load I see a lot of those king grills they look nice but I don't want to sacrifice ability to cool rig down on heavy pulls I run 77 and 64 a lot in summer
Open grill vs inserts

I'm guessing you want the pushed holes look with the stainless sheet. Maybe you could make the center slide open like two barn doors for a hard day of work in the hot weather, Or out west. That's my 2 cents.

I'm sorry, I say the title of the thread and really thought it was about bbq grill vs a stove insert, lol. Shows you how tired and hungry i am!nightgunner Thanks this.

More air flow the better, not only radiator but also CAC and AC.
More air will help keep under hood temp down , egr makes lots of heat, heat is your enemy.TennMan Thanks this. -
Ive always wondered about side hood vents.....would they allow air out easier?
-
Yes they would but u have to be able to close them for winter
-
No egr it's a glider forgot to put that in original

it don't matter heat is still your enemy, the free cool air through air charge cooler will let the engine make more power and more than offset the small aerodynamic gain from a more closed grill.
the only time a closed grill will help is if you have an old school engine with a full speed fan with no clutch and a set of shutters -
I believe you are probably right I think I will use a hex expanded metal to make the main structure witch has a 76% open area and back it or cover it with a stainless steel screen to keep the crap out of my condenser cac and radiator that should give me a good amount of air flow the grill I have now has a synthetic screen and crap horizontal bars and it is held in by 3 bolts two of which mount to fiber glass tabs that r broken I hit a bird and Broke them and it put a hole in my condenser thankfully jb weld wet fixed the condenser but I constantly fight to keep the grill from falling back against my condenser and cac and putting another hole in them crap design it should have been mounted to to front of the hood like the old school classic xl or fld also will eventually build better fenders for it they r a bad design also I hate sunk in lights and the module t style hump fenders
