Yes it does but depending on where you are going I would not go that way. If heading back to Box Elder, SD you are usually better taking 85 up to 585 to 90. A good alternate route if that is bad is to take I-25 to Douglas and then 59 to 90 in Gillette. I-25 hits 90 in Buffalo which is quite a bit out of the way unless you are going up to Montana.

I can't believe I made that goof. Was wrongly thinking 25 goes to Gillette.
Going up, I go to Dickinson ND. Going back, I go from Box Elder SD. Box Elder I'm taking 79 down the east side of the Hills. Then? Either through Edgemont or down into Nebraska to Scottsbluff and cutting over.
Going up, I stayed on 85 toward Lead. But turned off at Spearfish canyon. Couldn't have lost, maybe gained time. It was snowing and icy in Wyo. Otherwise, could have gone to Sundance on 585, then on 90 to continue north on 85 at Spearfish. Might be faster with no weather?

585 to 90 at Sundance and then East back to 85 at exit 10 in Spearfish is best and quickest way to Dickinson (85 North to 94 at Belfield ND then East about 20 miles to Dickinson on I-94). No matter the weather there is no reason to go through lead or Deadwood.

I got close to Lead. But turned off at Spearfish canyon. Straight up to 85 north from Spearfish.
I was going pretty slow. Ice and snow....about 35mph.
I'll definitely go the Sundance route next time.
I had never been to ND before. Impressed that everything is in very good shape there. I imagine if it isn't, the wind blows it down quickly.

Yes North Dakota is really not bad. I've been up and down 85 from and to Western North Dakota more times than I could count. If you get a chance have a meal at the Trapper's Kettle in Belfield and check out the "rare white Bat". And I love the Frontier Travel Plaza in Bowman, easy parking anytime day or night.

I haven't been that far west in a decade, but Nebraska and Wyoming seemed to have it out for me when I went. Treacherous conditions.

I spent last night in the Truck Stop across the street from Trappers Kettle. Thought about trying it. I will next time.
