Just want to add in here.. You should NEVER have to force it into gear with a lot of pressure.. if you take it out of one gear and move to the next, if you gently hold it against where that gear is, you will feel the gears turning and slowing and it will eventually glide in.. After a few miles like that it'll be like riding a bike !

So I've gotten pretty good at upshifting and downshifting

My problem is when I've lost too much speed... What gear to put it into or "skip shifting"

Thats just time, when your maintaining a speed at a good rpm, say out loud what speed and gear, "7th gear for 35mph" or whatever, then the next time you come down from 2 or more gears above, and you have space to take your time, coast down from 50 to 35, just before you get there, lean into 7th real light, and give it a little pedal. As the speed and rpms meet at the sweet spot it will fall in, then off the gas and it will drag you back more...

    (Your gear selection may vary)

It's going to boil down practice, practice, practice. Listen to the engine over watching the tach. Just remember even guys with 20+ years experience occasionally have a moment of lapse and miss a gear and grind just a little regardless what they may claim. Most of the time that missed gear and grinding comes from getting in a hurry.

I already knew how to drive stick in a car when I started out but learned how to shift(float) a big truck in a 1994 ford L8000 tri-dump with a 300 hp cummins and 8LL. What I had the most trouble getting the hang of was going from low range to high and vice versa.
