Look guys, you don't need a CDL to start in the oil field. A CDL in the oil field is just a necessary evil for the service company. Most companies don't even want truck drivers because they are considered lazy. The two biggest service companies in the world have their own state certified CDL testers and driving schools. If you want a start in the oil filed just use google and be persistent. I got my start in 2012 with no experience and no CDL. Its not hard if you have what they are looking for.

I thought I replied but don't see it. As far as college goes that's a bad plan. I've seen plenty of people going to do that, never made it to college. They start getting those paychecks and pretty soon consumerism has it's claws in them. School just gets more expensive because now you have to give up that income plus pay for school. You'll be getting your own place, buying a car, getting a big screen tv, home theater, fancy gaming rig and school will just keep getting further away.
The only thing remotely like this I would recommend is the military. School would be a step up after that. If your parents aren't going to help their income will still count against you. You'll have to live a year on your own for it not to. Just flip burger at McDonald's, get some roommates. Stay a broke mofo because that's what you're going to be in college. A community college will drastically cut your cost the first two years, like an order of magnitude cheaper. Study hard, make the grade, you'll get scholarships for the next two years. Just that associates helps a great deal though. The hard part is the social aspect, glorified high school making it real easy to f'up, but it's the same material, same knowledge, same skills as a four year school, calculus is calculus.
Overall a pell grant will pay for your tuition at a state school. Student loans will pay your room and board. That's without any scholarships. If you actually did well in school, honor roll, good placement exam scores, there's scholarships. The first step is apply and get accepted. The second step is talk to the financial aid office at the school. Chances are you can go straight into college with no need for this.nazgul Thanks this. -
Ive been to college into the start of my third year before I got out due to H1b workers coming to arkansas from India to do my work when I graduate. So I ditched it. If I wanted to go back it will be for a medical or medicine cert of one kind or another. Nothing like degrees.nazgul Thanks this. -
Remember to get the CDL A with manual transmission. DONT TEST in a automatic semi truck, it will put a restriction on your license against manual.
I apologize for being skimpy on information to your questions, generally when you hold a CDL, medical, TWIC (Except air force bases) and passport for Canada etc you will understand that you can literally work anywhere in these United States. Just be sure to have enough money on hand (I recall doing dishes in Long John Silvers in Carroll County three months to raise a thousand dollars cash, that led me to 6 weeks with ATS back in the mid 90's without having to borrow against payroll which essentially exploded then. They actually flew me to NC to hire orientation (I made the mistake to go Van, where specialized and heavy haul was the cool side of the company with the best equipment...)
In construction etc I found my place with wheeled loaders shoving rock and stone, It's playtime to me. Not work. (I am focused on safety etc which will surprise some here...) but it's FUN FUN FUN. I can get into any one no matter how big or small right now and get the rust off in about half a hour. The training was that good.
