I’m curious about the throttle response in a 2001 Detroit 12.7. We’ve got 6 cats (1 3406B, 2 3406E, and 3 pre 07 C15) and this Detroit, all with 18sp’s. I know different engines shift differently but I can’t describe how much more I like driving the cats over the Detroit. I know if all we had was Detroit I would get used to it but I like the linear and I’m my opinion smooth throttle respose of the cats (my favorite being the 3406E’s). I’ve read up and there’s companies who offer tuning and an option is for “stock” or “linear” throttle response when tuning a 12.7 Detroit. I know it’s never going to be exactly the same but my question is for people who have driven a tuned 12.7 Detroit, hows it compare to a cat throttle response?

Out of the 7 trucks we have only 2 are sleepers, one being the Detroit so when I go on an overnight trip sometimes I end up with the Detroit. Not the end of the world but personally I enjoy driving the cat much better. So would the “liner” throttle response option make it shift closer to how the cats do?

    I feel your pain.

    I got a tuned 14L ddec4 2000 year.
It takes getting used to the throttle, very touchy. Loved how my cats drove over this engine..
And God help you if you miss a gear, instant 2500 rpm. Lol.

I think that' is just how they are. If all you've ever drove is detroits i dont think it would be a problem. But we got spoiled with them yellow engines. Damaged goods now.

Meh, my Detroit is better on fuel over my cats but it is marginal.

I would appreciate if it didn’t turn into a fuel economy debate. I realize the 12.7 Detroit is the winner for fuel economy but we typically haul short haul 100k with no long stretches on the highway. It’s rare the company does an over night trip and when it does a 1-2mpg difference betweeen the 2 engines is cost minimal.

I’m asking just about throttle response and shifting. Since there’s a lot of accelerating and braking and therefore a lot of shifting
