I am currently in trucking school and got into an accident while driving a school tractor and trailer. While driving on the road during class, I hit a patch of ice on the highway, losing control of the trailer and sliding my rig into the ditch. I had to file a report with the police, but I'm getting conflicting information about this appearing on my MVR. I'm wondering, is getting into a minor accident like this early in my trucking career going to make it much harder for me to get that first job? My MVR is otherwise clean. I am already 'pre-hired' with a large trucking company, how likely are they to rescind their offer if they find out about this, and will they find out? I've been losing a ton of sleep over this, and I would like some more views and advice on what to do from this point on.
Got in an accident while in trucking school, where to go from here?

that is an ODD incident .
why did you have to do a police report?
very tough to say how this will go, but a CDL school is just to get your CDL. YOU haven't even been trained yet! that should, to me, be better than say it happened right after you went solo or were with trainer. IMO
about the sleep, i've been through a FEW predicaments sice i started this job 2 years ago. what I CAN tell you is (even though it is tough to listen to me or even your own thoughts. YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO CHANGE IT, WHAT HAPPENED HAPPENED! AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT WILL STILL HAPPEN, NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU WORRY ABOUT IT. -
First off, yes they will find out about this. It is in your best interest that it be from YOU, instead of from your school. You can't change it, so don't try to hide it. That is cause for termination should it come to light later on.
And as PHPat said, you are in training now. You are not trained yet. So this accident, while it is not good, should not be the end of your driving career. Unless you try to hide it.
Good luck, man!schlepper004 and panhandlepat Thank this. -
when you are a student - and you have a certified trainer with you (as in before you get your CDL - not with a company trainer once you have a CDL) - THEY share liability -
It would not suprise me to find out that the accident does not show up on your record...
you had to file an accident report
BUT WERE YOU CITED??? -
The school I went to would have refunded half your tuition and sent you packing. They have a reputation to maintain with the employers. Has nobody else seen a classmate wash out?
-
Interesting, been asking around nobody has heard of this situation I have spoken to.
Just to add acouple more questions......
Were you cited........
Was the trainer cited......
How much damage to truck.........
Which company are you pre-hired.........
Once the police finish with their report it will be place on your MVR....
To check that, you can get a copy of your mvr to see what it says.....
The company will be notified by the school and MVR if it has been posted by the time you are hired..... -
yeah - way back I had half of my schools class wash out - but it was for dumb stuff...
this guy hit a patch of Ice as a non cdl holder (with certified trainer in charge and supervising)
depending on the trainers statement - he would either be held for the accident - or it is a learning experience for all... -

Well; I for one would try not worry. Worrying either way will not help. I would be honest about it. One thing that you have in favor is that you were in school. Always remember that situation. Think how devastating that can be if there is a 4 wheeler between you and the ditch. It only takes a second to lose control. Never get over confident is any situation. Every day you will see someone off the road.Konstantin said: ↑I am currently in trucking school and got into an accident while driving a school tractor and trailer. Seems to me it would be more on the instructor with you. If you were on your own driving, they would say you were driving to fast for the conditions or something such as that. SO the intsructor should have either told you to slow down or been looking out and seen the ice patch. Thats why you are there, you never drove a truck and are ignorant to such situations and the instructor should have brought it to your attention. In my eyes the instructor is more at fault than yourself. I wouldnt worry about it like notarps said. You are just a student that is there to learn, dont let the school/instructors make you feel guilty, they are more at fault than yourself like I said earlier.
