sometimes them seals on those filters have a defect from the start or they get twisted somehow, you better start with removal, inspect, install and done. They do not make stuff like they used to unless you get quality and you still have to look.
I have a TA story now too...

TA careful .I had an issue on may 2017 with TA they actually did not change any filters oil or diesel .the only thing they didn't know is that I always do my own service .and I always date my filters , I didn't check after they where done with the work it did seem it was to quick of a job for being a TA. I took my truck drove it for about two weeks and I noticed my truck felt like it was surging for fuel(fuel filter was clogging)so when I got home I check my truck and noticed I had the same filters from last time I changed them myself.so I called TA in west Jefferson Ohio(########)and just said to take my truck so I did all they did was replaced them. They did not even offer an apology or excuse.
Oxbow, blairandgretchen, gokiddogo and 1 other person Thank this. -
$841 and I am back on the road. Seems to be running well now. Will update tonight.
Oxbow, blairandgretchen, Jazz1 and 2 others Thank this. -
What did they do? Sounds like there was more than gelled fuel.
Oxbow Thanks this. -

Okay.
At thunder bay husky for the night. Forecast says -22c so maybe -3?f. I will bite the bullet and idle tonight.
I got help from Hearst central garage in Hearst on. They are very good. Called at 8. In at 9. Out at 12. For $841 I got:
New fuel filter (just the one in clear glass)
New oil filter TIGHTENED PROPERLY
topped up oil to appropriate level
An extra fuel filter to take with me (not wrench they didn't have one to sell me)
An oil filter wrench. I hope to never need to open it.
Ran ecm for codes
Found 559 fuel rail pressure
Did injector leak down test....all passed
Did fuel rail psi test....passed
Cleared codes
2 new 2018 model Pete air filters. He talked me into it. They hadn't been done yet. 170 each.
The labor was 305. I think that is fair.
Ran it as hard as you can in a shop....appears fixed
Recalibrated turbo actuator. Said it was out 6 calibrations. Not sure exactly what that means. He did not take it off the top to re align the gears. Someone know..?
Get on road...running very well. Outside temp has recovered to -12c. Runs well all day.
I asked if he thinks taking the fuel pump head off to inspect plungers was needed. He said with what happened and the age of the truck it is very unlikely. I agreed so we did not.
Filled it up again at the husky here in thunder bay. Fuel economy where it always is for this run. About 2.1-2.2 km/L for anyone who cares.
2 big days of driving to do then a Monday delivery and monday reload all ready to go. Had it booked before this issue arised.Justrucking2, Jazz1, Oxbow and 7 others Thank this. -
Might as well be at the North Pole .....
So was the prognosis gelled fuel with a incompetent oil filter install...?gokiddogo Thanks this. -
Yes. Had I stuck to my original plan and made Hearst on day 1 rather than kapuskasing I would have been fine most likely. Hearst is the planned fuel stop. I had figured a 50 50 mix of md fuel and Toronto fuel would be fine (always has been). And with the progressively worsening symptoms it all makes total sense with the colder than expected overnight temperature. I have gelled a truck before when I was still green. I was trying to use as much of that relatively cheap diesel from USA and it ended up costing me. Lessons learned and hope it's smooth from here on out. I am on quite a roll work wise.

I wouldn’t trust any fuel bought in the mid Atlantic or north east in any temps less than +15F....
And that includes Irving products -
blairandgretchen and Oxbow Thank this.
