Medium to larger carriers may take that $2/mile crap as a back haul if they can drop the trailer and grab another head haul that's already pre loaded.

If it only costs them a drop and hook, then why not? It's paying for the fuel to get back, and then some.

The solo O/O is hard pressed to compete with that.

I'm sure it's market and lane dependent.

Not really rates are up across the board everywhere with virtually all equipment. Who ever saw $3.50+ pm for van freight? $4+ for reefer? $4.50+ for flats?

Yeah but that's like trying to make everybody stop for a day or two to abolish elogs. I picked up a cheapo yesterday from Omaha, ne to get me back home $800 for 450 miles. The last time I wanted to be a macho and demanded at least 1000 from there - and ended up going empty. Maybe If had refused and gone empty someone would have gotten it for 900, but who am I to fix the world like that? Now I have $800 and can get at least a drink or two in the tavern around the corner. There is always going to be someone finding an excuse. For me: I'll take 800 for going home from Omaha. Not proud of it, but that's what they pay.
For me problem would be if someone went over there from Chicago for less than 1500.

Denver flatbed isn't doing so well looking at the offered rates. $1.20-1.70 to FL. $1.40 to PA. Rates into the mountains at $400-$450. Colorado Springs for $300. It's definitely not everywhere seeing an increase.

You are the one who is wrong. Rate averages on DAT come from real data on what brokers are paying to move the freight. I live and die by the spot market and the info DAT sells is very good. What some of you guys don't seem to understand is what an average means. Things change quickly out here. Info from yesterday may be useful but it's still old news. Even with all the info in the world it always comes down to what your own experience tells you.

Exactly. There are still plenty of areas where freight and rates are weak.

Well since you think i am wrong some info for ya. I am no longer driving I AM a freight broker we DONT report nothing to DAT ot Truckstop or TruckerPath or any load board. However we have a credit form that goes out to carriers that the carriers fill out and send in to the load boards that IS where the data comes from what you the carriers report. It is how the 21,30, or days to pay and the credit score is calculated. Interesting you learned something today.
