What year model truck are you driving? That answer would simplify the question you have. Is it exempt? Maybe they (owner) knows it's exempt and doesn't need a eld in the truck. In a sense my truck is exempt on 3 counts.
My company doesnt use elds, is this legal?

How many miles do you drive a day?
-
As long as you don't go over 100 air miles, and return to your starting location within 12 hours, you do not need an eld, or any log book, just a time card, which you do not need in your possession. Regardless of state lines. That is basically the short haul (also known as timecard) provision.
You can run up to 8 days in a rolling 30 day period outside of the 100 miles, but you must fill out a paper log sheet. If you do this more than 8 days in a 30 day period, then you'll need an eld.
There's a ton of threads on this subject.Last edited: Feb 12, 2018
13'trucker and DSK333 Thank this. -
Bingo!

It seems he is running outside the 100 mile limit, 7 hours, or 3.5 out and 3.5 back.
-
well that is assuming there is no other time spent in a 7 hour day besides driving. and the roads are in a straight line from a/b it is very possible to go somewhere and come back in 7 hours and never travel outside 100 air miles.DSK333 Thanks this.

Assuming he's on interstates the whole way, that may be true @Ridgeline. But, if he's on back roads all day, it's possible to stay under 100 air miles for 7 hours. One of our regular stops is 65 miles away, and during the day time, it takes an honest hour and a half to get there, as it's all two lane roads in the mountains. Another stop we had was 100 ground miles, and that was a three hour ride. So it's possible.
DSK333 Thanks this. -

I just looked it up on Google maps, it shows 117 miles from City to city. I wouldn't hesitate to do it. I think 100 air miles works out to something like 114 miles on the ground. And I'd think that would be a straight line. Which you won't be able to do. It's borderline at bestDSK333 Thanks this.
