Hey guys I’m still a rookie by far but I was curious to know, if I wanted to lease on with the company I’m with now (Knight Trans) and I got the truck paid off would a Volvo be a good truck to take to another company to haul frac with once I put all the bells and whistles on it?? Thanks

There are certain types of trucks that were never designed to leave pavement. A Volvo is one of them.

You'll need heavy-duty axles, a reinforced frame and full-locking diffs if you ever want to pull off-road.

As soon as you hit the mud, you'll rip all those pretty plastic fairings right off, and get hung up on everything.

yea I see more freight shakers in the patch than volvo. Pete/kw/mack dominate the oilfield

Lease purchase yes. Looks like I won’t be doing that because like I said I plane to have my own truck hauling frac in the future. I was looking at kws tho

@DevJohnson Worry about getting driving experience before thinking about buying a truck. And lease purchases are a fast track to bankruptcy.

Absolutely correct. If you want to haul frack sand, you would be better off with a truck that isn't made of plastic. You will see a lot of older plastic trucks in the oil field, especially FreightSHAKERS, because they are cheap. Look closely and you will see they are held together with zip ties, bungie cords, and duct tape.

If you want a truck that will stand up to the off road pounding, then get a truck made of steel. You want full locking differentials, a wet kit, and sturdy frame and axles. Anything less than that and you will suffer. Trust me, I run the oil patch with a plastic truck, a KW T2000 without full locking differentials. I can't wait to get a real truck.

Don't plan to become an owner operator. Make it past your first year of trucking before formulating a plan. Most new drivers barely make it past 6 months. Being an OO doesn't guarantee you lots of money. It's a ton of extra work on top of driving/working 11-14 hours a day.
