In regards to the person stating they would never hire a felony. With all due respect its people like you that we do not need in our society. There is no one in this world perfect, not even you,you just have not been caught. You remind me of some people that always talking abvout ex-cons this and ex-cons that, but a month later we read about something you have done. You never know a person background and what they have been through.

This thread brings to mind the Grateful Dead and "what a long strange trip this has been". Am I showing my age here?
Just a few points to bring up that are drivin me a little crazy. The first is the word "ex-felon". As a felon, there just ain't no ex to it unless actually have the money and contacts to get a pardon and wipe you record clean. The same thing goes with just about any other ex. I am not an ex-addict. I might have 81/2 years clean but I know that if I go back, I'll durn sure find my bottom a whole lot quicker this time.
The saying that pot is a "gateway" drug to using the harder stuff is a crock. My gateway was alcohol and I bet its the same for 90% of the addicts out there.
To Mr. Pro driver. Yes the recidivision rate for cons is great but then it seems that a butt load of people just like you help the problem by not being willing to help out. Don't get me going about politicians that not only should be felons but have "helped" make a lot of us felons by bending to what is supposed to be the "popular will of the people". Will do or say anything to get your vote!!
Do I deserve to be a felon and have it follow me my whole life? Maybe yes to the first but a definite no to the second. I am resigned to being a felon due to the laws that are on the book and try to accept it because of all that I did get away with before I got caught. I got caught with 2 empty quarter bags but because they were able to scrape enough off to test, well, here I am.
My felony is now 10 years old, I'm a student, and am hoping to find an otr job. Try not to belittle me for trying to follow a dream. Thanks so much for letting me have the opportunity to vent a liitle.

Both the guys running for president have or have had family members "fall out of line"/use drugs in the past Mccains wife was "strung" out on pain killers, Obama says he used a like coke, marijane......I'm sure in Mccain's family history he's peobably been juiced up on pain killers, he was never caught....

The part about people feeling felons shouldn't have any oppurtunities is their own choice....If that person feeling this way house gets robbed, car gets stolen. Who cares what you lost, you didn't want that felon to have a job anyway.....good luck finding your stuff......

as far as hiring a felon to drive a truck, i understand its a high risk job.....

i do believe though they could make it easier for felons to get jobs......or should just start putting felons to sleep, save the felon the hassle of trying to win everybody over.....

I understand all.I am not angry about my situation, but I am a person that is trying to do better in life, but no one seems to understand me.I made a mistake in life and have paid my debt to society, but I am still paying for it.I dont have a lot of the things the trucking companies are asking for.For my charges of aggravated assualt and armed robbery I was sentence to 10 years, from august13,1997 to august13,2007,but sinceI have been home I have not been in any trouble.I am willing to sign contracts with companies that have their own school. This is something I have always wanted to and trying to follow my dreams. Is their anyone out here that knows someone or some companies I can talk with and try to get my point across to them.I dont use my age at the time of crime as an excuse, but I have learned from my mistakes.I have a cdl permit, and has been dismissed from trucking school twice because they could not find me a job inside of their network. Can anyone please give me some advise on whom I may contact.

The problem is that those felonies are not far enough in your past. Experienced drivers have a hard time finding work as drivers, with felonies that often exceed a decade or more in their past.

You're totally untrained, and you have two felony convictions. That's a triple whammy that is hurting your chances of finding a decent job, much less one in the trucking industry.

Because of the two felony convictions, carriers that do business in Canada have no use for you. Canada will not allow you in. You most likely will not clear the background check for a hazardous material endorsement, so that leaves you useless to even more companies.

What can you do? Roll up your sleeves, adopt a pro-active attitude and strategy, while understanding that the odds are against you, and get busy overcoming your past.

This will include you having to speak with several companies, and when you do, present yourself in a light that makes them WANT to look over your past, because you may have demonstrated to them that you are remorseful about you past. Because that's what you've got to do. You've got to convince them that you ARE better than what your record says about you.

According to an article I read just last week in the latest The Trucker issue, there is a man operating as an independent driver recruiter in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma that specializes in helping ex-cons get into the trucking industry. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I am open minded enough to understand that everyone is different, and it's not right to judge people on the surface. Trucking may be the thing that will turn your life around. He also works with experienced drivers and with several different companies. He stated that 45% of his business is helping ex-cons and those with felonies on their records. 55% of his business, and his mainstay comes from helping place the experienced with clean records.

I have a a couple of felonies they happened in 1985 & 86. neither crime involved a gun in th commission of said crimes even tho on was the possession of a gun the having it was the crime. The other was an Aggravated Assault a fight which I did not start but I did over react and went overboard with defending myself.

That said, it affected my obtaining a post with the big companies. There are two that I know overlook the felony Mansur Trucking Inc out of Janesville Wisconsin, and Davis Tranport Inc out of Missoula,Montana whom I had the pleasure of working for, for about a week 8 days to be exact, so keep in mind that they are extreme about safety if you apply with them.

One last word on the comps that say 5,7or even 10 years past for felonies keep this in mind, they are in no way bound to hire you based on that wether its in print or not and they look at the type of felony in the decision making process violent crimes are a big problem for them

Be Safe Be well and Be between the lines, and remember its alwys better to offtrack th to encroach

I recently workes with some drivers who had felonies in the past to get new driving jobs. Seems when they filled out some of those quick applications to get the background checks done along with the license checks they were invited to hire into the companies. When the bus and plane tickets were going thru processing for them after the dac and checks were done the companies asked if they had anything to add they didn't know about. Being truthful they told about the felonies. The recruiter then starting asking specifics!!! Seems these past felonies more than 10 years ago for most were not showing up at all on these very thorough checks, and these guys were shooting themselves in the but for telling the future companies about them. Of course the offer of employment was then taken from them. Before you give that info out, make sure that is not showing up on the dac and background reports the companies are receiving, ALL THESE MEN DID THEIR TIME AND HAVE FAMILIES AND HAVE NEVER BEEN IN TROUBLE SINCE, WHETHER WRONGLY ARE RIGHTLY ACCUSED OF WHAT THEY WERE SENTENCED FOR!!! DO NOT SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE BUTT AND BE DENIED A JOB, UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR RECORD REALLY LOOKS LIKE!!! IF A COMPANY HAS WRONGLY REPORTED INFO ON YOUR DAC TAKE THE TIME TO CLEAR IT OFF BEFORE APPLYING TO ANOTHER. THIS WILL HELP INSURE YOU GET THE JOB YOU APPLY FOR THE NEXT TIME. IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS!!!! :biggrin_25512:

I will put it in plain English for you as an employer, you have a felony, you are screwed in trucking. This ain't rocket science or personal. Look, times are tight right now, the good old days are long gone. There are more than enough qualified "clean" drivers out there to choose from. And you ain't it!

Now, you hopefully have not stopped reading, as I have a solution to your problem. What good is trashing a guy without giving him an opportunity?

Now, if I were you, I would look around and see what needs to be done in your local area. This may sound stupid, but start your own business. It could be shoveling snow, cleaning windows, waxing floors or cleaning toilets. All jobs that I have done. A nasty divorce will make you do strange things. I could not imagine what I would do with a felony! Though I would have liked to have... Never mind.

Look, look real hard. Look at your surroundings. Who needs help, who needs something done? And don't do it for free. What do you know how to do? And think outside the box. Some of the richest people in the world have had much less than a high school education. From what little I have seen of you, you at least have that, and are not stupid.

Think outside the box, as you will not be driving a big truck any time soon, unless you steel it. But hopefully you are better than that.

I also have a felony and was having troubles finding an OTR job. First thing to know is, most companies are not going to hire you if you don't have your CDL. Went back to school and paid for mine. Look for votech schools in your state. Not only will they be cheaper but will also have better training. I was hired by Transam so give them a shot once you have your CDL. They won't reimburse for your schooling and the pay is so so BUT, I at least have my foot in the door now.
You may also have to wait until the economy gets better. There are butt loads of drivers out there for them to choose from right now. Good luck and keep trying. Only way you'll find a job.
