A properly tuned wilson 2000 or 5000 or fiberglass (FGT series) will perform as well as an equally tuned 10K or open coil antenna.
Them big old coils are more about looks on the classic style conventionals such as the W900s, 379s and classic XLx were you have alot of chrome etc.
They are much harder on mounts and studs do to their extra wind resistance.
Lots of power

In my experience with both types I've found that the open coil metal antennas work better, and are easier to tune. but once again, it comes down to preference. I myself am going to go with a Predator 10k, as my browning is due to be replaced. I also like the metal antennas because they are MUCH harder to break than a fiberglass one. I used to snap fiberglass ones two or three times a month( I run where there are lots of trees) I haven't broke one in three years since I switched to metal. just my opinion. as far as radios go, I like import radios if you can afford them. between a ranger and a galaxy cb, I'd go with a galaxy, the rangers are not tech friendly ( less techs can work on them) galaxies are much easier to get repaired/tuned in more locations, but if you just want a basic cb, I'd go with a Cobra 29, tuned and peaked with a good mic

I really like my uniden pc 78 elite had it tweeked and peaked by a guy in the TA by Greenville, SC did a real nice job. Now the antenna is a k40 metal whip the kind that you can mount on a car trunk lid or atach it to a magnet. The guy did not beleave me that it would go on a mirrior mt so he came out and looked for him self. He said he liked the set up and would probably recommoned it. The k40 is about 60.00 dollars but it has a coax on it that I would asum is good why put juck coax on a good antenna. And you can hit all the trees you want and won't break. The best dastance I've seen so far has been about 20 miles.
