DOT number without an MC number when leased to another carrier. How to do that?

Please share what you learned by doing this. Do you mean if I own the equipment that I should put the equipment in a business name and then get my authority in another name. Then I have my own equipment leased onto my authority in the other business name.
Reason I am asking is because I have been leased on to a company for 5 years and didn't apply for DOT when I registered the equipment in a different state. Wish I did because now my dot number would have been five years old. Now want to get own authority and IRP renewal is coming up so thinking about getting
IRP in my company name and with my state that way I can keep my plates if I get mc#.
    Thanks
