The unfortunate reality is that many of the rules, regulations, policies, and inconveniences we must deal with in modern society are a direct result of the lawsuit-happy culture we live in. Most of these rules and policies are put in place to protect from or mitigate potential litigation.

It would be wonderful if we could return to a time when the last thing on your mind was being sued. Unfortunately, in a greed-driven society it will never happen.

You can call it what you will. However if you decide to allow an unauthorized passenger into your truck you are taking a serious risk. Insurance company's can and in most cases will refuse to cover any claims or legal actions that arise out of any accidents. There is also another issue with having passengers. Heaven forbid you allow a teenage female into your vehicle and she later says you did something? Yes, this has happened. Yes it stinks having to be this way. However best to stay safe and call the cops if your confronted with an emergency.

The problem is this, the rules are not there to be bent. If someone is broken down on a deserted road, that's one thing but in a truck stop or a highway where there is traffic, more like not.

Insurance costs are one huge issue.

Once you depart from a policy and make exceptions, your risks go up and that's what an owner needs to mitigate.

The driver calling and asking permission takes the responsibility off their shoulders, documenting it after the fact puts them in the cross hairs for the insurance to demand a correction of this behavior.

AND yes that's one of the biggest issues with human behavior, the common sense doesn't extend to cover the what ifs.

right. So, I'm curious about this too: Isn't what constitutes an emergency a subjective/judgement call?

And yet he could have called 911, and they would have been helped.
Saved the job and actually followed both the law and company policy. No, Autozone did right here.

Sad thing is, the driver did not really do any wrong either. Just it did break the law and company policy.
